poor performance on dual core/2gb

i am installing xp on a dual core machine with 2gb ram and it is taking 4 hours per install. i am also installing sql server 2005 and this is taking over 1 1/2 hours.
what could be the problem?
my typical install times on machines with half this spec are 35 mins for xp and 30 mins for sql!
