PM8 Resize Partition Failed recover data loss

February 21, 2011 at 22:19:02
Specs: Windows XP pro 64bit, Intel Quad Core 2.40ghz/2GB
Hi. I have a problem with my E partition. I installed a Partition Magic 8.0 to do some resize with my partition, and when I started it, the Partition Magic gave some errors, and changed drive letter from E: to *: . I can't see that partition any more in windows explorer. It's not fair, i have more important data on my E drive.
Appreciate any help!

You can try running a live Linux disk - Ubuntu for example - that may be able to let you see your data and let you recover it to an external drive. Repartitioning a drive is a risky thing to do at any time - with important data on it is suicide, as you've discovered - I suspect even PM would have warned about backing up data beforehand.

If there were errors at the start of the process then there is likely to have been a problem with the drive itself, so you may need to budget in replacing that as well.

Thank you for your explanation!
You said the drive itself have problem, physical problem you mean?
I think my disk is healthy, before i repartition, i used HD tune to check, no bad sectors found. So i don't make bkup, just go ahead directly.

You said i can use live Linux disk, do you mean it is just the same as the bootable disk like Easeus Partition Master, acronis creating, right?

I understand your frustration but what exactly is not fair about your situation?

You are learning why you should ALWAYS keep at least two copies of your personal files.

You can use testdisk to repair the partition or you can use recuva to recover the files.

I recommend you try testdisk first because it will be easier. If you can't get testdisk to work than use recuva. Be sure to read all instructions for both BEFORE using.

Get both at the links below.

At the very least you don't need any tools other than what you already have. Simply copy the personal files to another media. My preference is optical media. CDR or DVDR. That will at least protect the most important files on your computer.

If you want to make things easy for yourself, should the worst happen, then you need to also use imaging/ backup software. There are many freeware and retail products out there. Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. The commercial products usually provide more flexibility than the freeware.

That said, many of the freeware products will get the job done.

The product you mention is very good. It is part of a suite of tools. Get them at the link below.

There is an issue with linking to that company here at CN. Google for "Todo Backup home". The parent company name starts with eas**s. I can't use the name as CN blocks it. As far as I know it is a good suite. I think the issue here may be about free advertising.

Anyway, look for their entire free list of programs. More than one of them will be of use to you.
