hi, recently i had installed win XP on the computer, each time i connect to the internet (dial up), sometimes, i am not lucky, i get this msg:
The system has to shut down. Pls save all work and log off.
Initiated by NT Authority\ System
Windows must restart because Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated
Unexpectedly.what does it mean?
how can i stop it from happening?
pls help.thank you

Sounds strangely like the most recent virus floating about. Just to be on the safe side, here's a couple of links with 'fixes'.
Symantec

http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=stingerI'll assume that you have some sort of antivirus running...
good luck!
mike

You have got the Blaster Worm. Search this site or go to Symantec for removal directions. Microsoft also has a patch for you to install.

most probably you have been hit by the msblaster worm!
here is the instructions that i did to get rid of the worm:1)BEFORE YOU CONNECT TO THE INTERNET, go to control panel, click admin. tools, then click services. when the services window opens, scroll down till you find "remote procedure call" [NOT RPC LOCATE]
2)click it... then click on the recovery tab
change the first, second, subs. failers to: "restart the service"... (now you can acces the internet with enough time to get the patches before without resarting all the time :) )3) go to www.symantec.com and look around for the w32.blaster removal tool
4)once downloaded, run the tool, let it take all the time it needs,
5)after the worm is removed, got to microsoft.com and look around for the blaster worm patch : download it and install it
that should get rid of the worm ;)

i have done the tool to remove the worm, but at the end, it says i still have one remaining worm that cannot be removed......i am now d/l a patch from microsoft......will this eventually work?
thank you all........

karen, Did you turn off System Restore then restart your computer then turn on System Restore? It's very possible that the remaining worm file may be in your System Restore folders. Easy directions for doing this are at this link.
