I installed win xp on amd athalon 800mgh computer. The system info does not show the right amounts for processor speed or the right amount of RAM. This is listed correctly in the bios. I cannot get the modem to dial. When I go to device manager it does not show all of the pci slots or com ports. When I query the modem, i get correct responses but it will not dial out. I have reformatted and reinstalled xp, it stays the same. Is it possible that xp doesn't recoginze the entire motherboard, only parts? What can I do next? I am at a total loss. How do I find out what motherboard i have? There are no installation disks as this was a rebuilt machine and the company wants to keep charging bench charges for taking it in there any time you need anything. I know there is a Sis 730 on it , is this the motherboard?

The modem problem sounds like you don't have the correct modem driver installed. That's exactly the way mine acted when I had the wrong driver. Everything looks like it's working but it just won't dial out.

Your problem can be many things. Can you open up the tower and see if the manufactuer's name and model number are stamped on the motherboard? I need more info to help you.
The motherboard is the largest pc board in the tower, the sis chip you see is part of the m/b chipset, one is the northbridge the other is the south bridge, together they make up the m/b chipset. It is possibe you have a bad m/b all together. You will need to be more specific about the model and make of your m/b so you can trouble shoot the problem. How much computer experience do you have? The problems you mention will require a thorough understanding of pc trouble shooting.......Good Luck..
