Hard drive is fine, the other winME patition boots when I set it active. I used patition magic to split my hd into 2 partitions, 1 for ME, another for XP. I was keeping ME to run games that wouldn't run on XP, they were old games that would think it was win NT instead of 95. Why won't the xp ntfs partition boot?

The windows XP partition is NTFS while the WinME patition is FAT32 the xp partition is in the first 20GB the winME is in the second
I don't see how that would affect it since they are not in the same partition. and windows 2000 ran just fine like that. but I did try to upgrade to XP and it said that it couldn't find a partition, go figure. so I tried installing with the cd and quick formmatted the partition with NTFS, which it was to begin with.

because WINME don't support NTFS

Update: Cannot get XP to run! tried formatting XP install partiton to fat32 with Partition Magic and coping the entire cd contents to hd and running winnt.exe, NOTHING!!!!!!!!!! still no boot after copying all files and finishing text mode part of setup!!!!!!!

Windows needs PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space.*
Super VGA (800 × 600) or higher resolution video adapter and monitorCD-ROM or DVD drive
Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
It may be that being so low down on the 'food chain' that your system just isn't making the grade. I'd be very sceptical about using this computer with XP as it would be spending the whole time thrashing data on and off the swap file [and that's just the Operating SYstem files, as XP takes up a good 128Mb or thereabouts just for itself]. SO when would it actually do any real work.
Do yourself a BIG FAVOUR and stay with Me / 98 for this computer.

ME/98 is crashing all the time, my comp. meets min sys req. and I did have 2000 but couldn't use any games! and I have to have the games. but win98/ME was too busy crashing to work.

If 98 & ME are crashing as well, then maybe the CPU or memory is damaged in someway. You said that you can see the text bootloader? Well perhaps as XP uses such a big chunk of memory, maybe it used the bad part of memory straight away, whereas 98/ME don't use it until they're up and running?
