Please Help. Computer really slow

I don't know what the problem is, my Aunt's computer is a dell laptop Inspiron 2650. And it's just unbelievably slow. Like sometimes it takes up to 3-5 minutes to open a program like Explorer or Word. I tried everthing, freeing up ram, ending some processes after restart, I tried anti viruses I tried getting rid of spyware, both spybot and ad-aware. But nothing helps. I've never seen such a slow computer before. And it's been like this for a while. Does anyone know what the problem could be? Thanks in advance for help.
