you know how to edit registry without damage?

If your answer is yes, go here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Session Manager

the Value for BootExecute should only have these: autocheck autochk *

sorry again, Had to try it for myself to see, its here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\Session Manager

this is what the value looks like when scheduled for next reboot:

autocheck autochk /p \??\C:
autocheck autochk *

you would just remove the top line.

also search your whole registry for this keyword: BootTimeChkdsk

the value should be nothing at all.

sorry, I have diskeeper 7 installed in XP now(which overwrites the built in), so its tough to help you figure this one out, i would search your whole reg and look for anything that could possibly be making it deny you from defragging, for example, search for defrag, hit F3 and look around, dont delete or change anything if your not sure, or install diskeeper 7 or O&O defragger and forget the built in defrag junk, its not very good anyway.

Go to your HD manufacture site and get the diagnostic utility before assuming your disk is going bad, could just be a hosed windows XP.

I get exactly the same problem with XP, the tedious chkdsk /f performing every single time I turn on the computer or reboot.

It feels like chkdsk /f is performed but the flag showing it needs to be done next time is not cleared.

I have this same issue. I found this relevant article on the support.microsoft.com site...

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q160963

The article is titled "CHKNTFS.EXE: What you can use it for (Q160963)

Evidently CHKNTFS can clear the condition that cause CHKDSK to run everytime....

Good Luck
-Jim
