Hi,

I've been having this problem on and off for months already, but it is now at a new level so I need to do something about it...

There are three computers connected to the Linksys WRT54G (first or second version), one through a LAN cable and the other two are wireless. Now sometimes everything works excellent and fast, with no trouble at all. But *most* of the time, certain sites (at random) simply will not work- the connection will time out or something like that... Sometimes even while *inside* of a site and trying to get to another one, it will not be able to connect...

I've downloaded Firefox, Netscape and already have been using IE, and none of them seem to make a difference. This problem seems to be on all the computers- sometimes the router will let you go everywhere, and sometimes only certain websites. As of yet I have not experienced it not allowing *any* websites... (I'm on Computing.net right now, but nothing else really works now! Though I"m sure other times this site wouldnt work and others would...)

This problem can drive (or has already driven) a person insane so it has to be fixed asap... Its like you have to beg and wish that it work for the site you need... Though often times if it doesnt work the first time, it would work after several tries... (though often times not)

I thought that it has to do with resolving the IP addresses but I have no idea how that can be related to the router, being that if the router is unplugged and the connection is direct to a computer, everything seems fine...

Just for clarification- things like Winamp or other things that seem to use IP addresses instead of names tend to work much better... Or this may just be a coincidence...

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,
Larry

"if the router is unplugged and the connection is direct to a computer everything seems fine".
Probably a bad router?

Go to the website of your router's manufacturer and see if there are any firmware updates for your particular model. It will also tell you how to apply these updates. Oftentimes it's just a matter of a firmware gone bad in this situation. You can also check the settings of your router (firewall, proxy settings) by accessing it's controls. This is usually done by typing the numeric address of the router (usually 192.168.1.1) in you web-browser. This is also how you apply any firmware update.

But this may or may not be the case- you see sometimes the computer *through* the router runs online no problem at all (rarely- but mainly right after its started...)! So I dont know if it is just because the router is there, or if its some other reason...

I do have the latest firmware installed. As a matter of fact I'm starting to think that I might be better of going back to their first version of firmware and see if things change.

The real question that I have is that being that it looks as though it simply cannot resolve the IP addresses (whenever it cant go online), is it possible that this is still a router issue or maybe an ISP issue or maybe a computer issue??

Go into the routers settings nad make sure your method of connection is PPOE over Ethernet. Also make sure you have the correct username and password for your ISP entered. Good Luck

Check and check (I think so- otherwise how could I even *use* the internet at all? I am right now using Computing.net through it... Is it possible to be using the DSL with the wrong username and password?)

This forum should change its method from posting last posted question first, to posting last posted *reply* first. If someone's question isnt answered, then it is pushed way down and never brought back up... And if there are already some replies, then it looks as though it has been answered when in fact it may have not been...

This forum has been running I believe since 1996 with only a few problems. As a regular here I was one of the first responders. Question-Have you tried replacing the router? You seem to want to go everywhere else except where the problem appears to be. Rgds.

I have tried connecting it directly to the DSL modem, and it seems to work fine. But the reason that I cant say this for certain is because sometimes it works fine through the router as well... so it could just be a fluke...

I guess I'm asking like this: is it possible that the router should sometimes not be able to forwards a DNS lookup or something like that? You see if the net did not work at all or if the LAN didnt work properly, then I'd think that its definitely the router. But being that the local networking is fine and the only issue is the internet, I'm not so quick to blame the router...

I spoke with the DSL company and they said that the connection is fine, so they have nothing else to help...

It seems that if I use IP addresses instead of url names, then the internet works just fine... :-/

The reason I'm asking the question here is in case someone might have an idea as to what the issue might be...

Thanks alot,
Larry

PS- After being here for a while, do you think that this setup is good? Have you seem forums where the most recent *post* (not thread) is at the top...? I dont know I just think that it might make more sense that way- if there is an active thread, then it is at the top...
