playing DVDs - where's the decoder

As I'm navigating through the 'integrated' WinXP Home, I realized that I don't have a DVD Decoder to play DVDs. Windows wants me to use Media Player (no problem for me - as long as it works). However, when I try to play a DVD, I get an error that there's no compatible DVD Decoder associated with Media Player - however, there's a troubleshooting guide to help. Ok, I'll bite. I click on that - and end up with a list of 5 or 6 different companies that apparently want to 'sell' me a DVD decoder. I'm not looking for super editing capabilities. All I want to do is play a stupid DVD!
Does anyone have a workaround, fix, or some solution that will let me play DVDs (with or without Media Player)?

Try searching on Google for DVD decoders. There are a few shareware programs out there, also some plug-ins for Media Player.

From my understanding, you still have to purchase a program like WinDVD or PowerDVD. Tim's comment sounds interesting but I do not know what to get that fits his description.
Personally, buying a DVD decoder card, like the RealMagic card is cheap and well worth it. DVD play is flawless, fantastic and looks better than any card I have used.
