Since my .DAT file is burned into cdr, I can't rename it to .MPG and I can't copy it from my cdr over to my HD to rename it cos' windows won't recognise it.

So how do I play .DAT files in windows media now?

Have you tried coping the dat files back to the hard drive and then changing the ext and reburning.

I can't. Windows won't recognise this .dat file and thus won't allow me to copy and bring over.

I have a lot of VCD movies that show as .dat files on the disk. Just start media player use File>Open tabs and change file option to "All Files" open the .dat file and media player does the rest. Works for me.
