Hi guys! I play a few on-line games and on these sites I get a ping rating in m/s, for example:-PING 105ms. What I would like to know is, is it a higher or lower ping rating which is best? Say, is a ping rating of 105ms better than a ping of 55ms or vice versa? Many thanks!

Hi Pariah, hello everyone,

The lower the better.

The 'ping' is the time taken for information to be transfered between your machine and the gaming server. Thus a lower ping is better!

Most servers have a maximum ping setting, so only people below this threshold can enter the server. People with high pings tend to 'lag' servers, creating reduced gameplay for other users.

Numerous things can affect your ping, such as: the speed of your connection; the physical distance between you and the server, and any other bandwith use on your network/connection.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot guys, a big help! My ping is usually about 55ms so I guess that's pretty good. Thanks again!

Anything under 100 ms is considered very good.

Ping is useless for the most part. It can be dumped by routers and delayed by all sorts of devices along the way. It can be totally lost, yet other traffic can be sent. It is like any other broadcast traffic.

Ping is a very basic diag tool. It uses a tcp/ip UDP that usually has nothing to do with what you really do online. Unless your game uses the same udp port ping does there is almost no value in it's number.

Consider using other tools to determine Q.
