Hey. Whenever I try to save a picture from the web by right-clicking and save as it becomes corrupt. It saves alright and appears in my documents folder as something.jpg [or .gif etc] but when I try to open it I get the message

"C:/Documents and Settings\....something.jpg
Paint cannot read this file.
This is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported."

I can't open it with any picture viewer I have [paint, Micrografx etc] and it's annoying as I can now only get pictures by screenshot. Also, I'm sure this isn't some kind of copy protection as I can't save ANY pictures whatsoever [even ones I host myself]. Any tips?

Just to let you know, that Paint is a very, very crappy program. Download a Freeware Paint Program or buy one.

Same thing happend to me before. :0

Maybe ur security settings in IE have been set wrongly ??

Go to Tools/Internet Options...
1) On Security tab click 'Defaults Level' button
2) On Advanced tab, click 'Restore Defaults'

Hope this helps

Paint may be a very basic Program but it's hardly 'crappy' - it does work for what it is intended for and it does normally open .jpgs and .gifs (won't animate tho')

Sorry - don't know the answer to the problem but getting an alterantive does not solve the Paint problem - if that is the problem

Nope, that didn't help keef. Tried that, restarted the machine and still the same problem. Also I haven't touched my security settings so I doubt it was that anyway...

As I said, it won't open in ANY picture viewers I have [and I have about 6 on this computer inculding Micrografx Picture Publisher, Paint, Photoshop and a few more others] so I'm sure it's not the program.

Also it's just a .jpeg...nothing special. So paint should be able to open it, right?...Anyone? :P

You say it appears as something jpg, Well what is the something? Right click on the file and choose properties and see what kind of file it is, and can you save it as something else when you are saving it?

The "something" is the filename. Sorry I was unclear: I should've written .jpg. So suppose I'm saving a photo called picture1 from a website, it "saves" as picture1.jpeg. In all aspects and according to properties, it is a .jpg. Another thing I've noticed is that I'm given the option to save as a bitmap [.bmp] or ART file yet it appears in my documents as a .jpg. *scratches head*

If it was a corrupted paint program, shouldn't it open well in Photoshop or some other program then? Also if I scribble in Paint and save, it saves fine. It also saves fine if I download from a floppy or save a screenshot :/.

It's got NOTHING to do with his viewers - he has already stated that he CAN do a screen print and view that, so the prob HAS to do with saving the pix from a web page onto his PC.

Having said all that, I don't have a clue why it's not working lol !!

Maybe saving to a different location could be worth trying - failing that, u could try 'repairing' IE6 !?!?!

When you save it in my documents and if you choose your view options to list does the icon of the photo have the icon of a jpg that microsoft give the jpg pictures? A bitmap icon is differant from a jpg icon and vise versa. Was just curious if it shows as a jpg icon? Little square icon with a corner cut off of it and like a sunset looking picture inside of it.

I have had irfanview start to open things that wouldnt open and say something about file format and as if I wanted to change it and it took care of the problem on its own. I thought maybe that might work for him as well.

Yes it has a JPEG icon, it also says "JPEG image" below the filename and in properties says:

Type: JPEG image
Origin: My Pictures
Size: 32.0Kb [although they're not always exactly 32kb...that's just an example].

If it's of any help - I just Saved Doc's Photo - Right click - Save Picture As....

The first time I just Saved it and it Saved as an Unassociated File - so it wouldn't open in anything

I did it again but this time I re-named it to 'Photo' before Saving and it Saved ok -opens in Fax Viewer and in Paint

I've never had to Re-Name Images before when Saving - usuually do it after

That's strange Lesley...I did as you said and renamed it to photo, saved and it saved as:

Type Of File: File
Description: Photo

thus is not even a picture file now! LOL.

Are you referring to doc's Photo or the one you want to Save...

Why didn't you select jpeg from the Dropdown ?

I've just looked at the Properties of doc's picture - the one I saved first - the Unassociated one and it says..

'FARM_AID_CONCERT_OHCP101 File

?????

I just tried the above action with docs photo. I couldn't choose to save as a .jpeg because I'm only given two options: .bmp and .art [sometimes I'm also given the option to save as .gif, but not this time]. I'm completely lost as to how to fix this o.0..

Oh - I see....

Have you tried emptying your Temporary Internet Files ?

Do that and then try Saving your Image again - see if you get all the options in the Dropdown

I use Windows disk clean up to clean out my Temp. files...I just did it again by hand though for curiosity's sake and we have a break through! I was able to succesfully save the little image at the bottom of this page [the "next message" arrow]...still no luck with .jpgs though :/

Some Images - like the 'next message' do only give .bmp and .gif as options but if an Image is a jpg then you should get that option

Sorry - I'm stuck now

Leave it a while and re-Post - there may be some diferent people on in a while

Sigh I didn't want to hve to jump in here and tell you all off but you forced me to. hehe jp I suck with comps ANYWAY. I think I know what your doing wrong. Your not supposed to hit save. Your supposed to hit save as. You don't just leave it like that though. you want to rename the file TO coolpic.jpg Notice how i added the jpg extention before it would just come up as a file as what you said. This better work or u and your 69 can go ... yourself. haha jp you know I love you. Anyway lol if that don't work go for the ole fashion refomat.. fixes everything :)

Another thing you can't open up art files with bitmap. This must be what you are saving your files to sinceyour not adding an extension (.jpg) what you will friggen need to to sigh is open a folder -> view -> folder options -> file types -> find and dbl click art -> edit -> browse -> find internet explorer folder -> select iexplorer.exe or whatever its called and your set. This better fix your damn problem. :) 3 Eric

I do hit "Save As" Eric :P, and I save as .bmp as I don't know how to handle .art files [not used to them etc]. I will try adding the .jpg extension though...didn't think of that hehe. Thanks!

I had the same problem with XP a while ago, and Irfanview could open them after it fixed the file extension. Never did get Internet Explorer working right again until I reinstalled XP over itself. The Opera web browser works fine at saving pics though. I could also fix the pictures manually by right clicking and selecting Rename, then just add.jpg at the end of it. Eventually, IE couldn't open new windows or save web pages either, so that's when I did the repair install to fix things.
