pictures preview unavailable

March 27, 2011 at 19:43:34
Specs: Windows XP
Lately almost half of my images in my photo albums have started saying 'preview unavailable' whenever I click them, the thumbnail for the image is also gone. This is only on .jpg images so far.
The file size is still the same as before, but no images exists.
Sometimes pictures will start doing this as iam looking at them even-making the pics useless from then on.

In the file association area, the icon next to .jpg is of the 2 gears on it like a system icon, however if I click 'opens with' and click OK even though Windows Picture & Fax Viewer is ALREADY selected, the icon changes to the standard orange looking .jpg thing.

If i click 'properties' and go to 'summary' is says 'Summary properties are unavailable for selected source(s)". If i do the same on a picture that is still there, the summary works fine as always.

*Ive tried opening with PAINT, and anything else I could think of as a picture viewer but it only says its not a supported file type.

*Ive done the start/run/ xxxx.dll stuff to no avail.

*Ive tried changing every folder option known to man, as well as making new actions such as PREVIEW2 and setting it to open with windows Picture viewer to no avail also.

*Ive tried making new folders

*Ive tried moving my photos to the ''my photos'' folder that is in My Documents.

*Ive tried copying, moving, etc to other areas of my drive. Have not tried putting on a flash drive yet because my laptop says there is a problem with every single flash drive I try to use so i gave up on that long ago.

*Ive tried scanning/checking for errors with spybot, AVG, CCLeaner, Privacy Guardian, Comodo Firewall, and found nothing.

*Ive tried using a program called imgeditor (google it) which just repairs and restores image file associations back to default like windows picture and fax viewer-which did nothing.

*Ive tried making a .reg file with this in it:

which is said to fix the problem, but whenever I try it on my machine I get the message ''cannot import xxxxxxxxxxxx file. This file is not a registry script''.

Iam pulling my hair out on this thing. The pictures I have are from waaaay back and iam not blessed with such things like real broadband where I live to upload these pictures anywhere. I have a CD with some pictures on it but not the ones that have disappeared of course.

I dont know what would have brought this on or for how long this has been happening. My laptop is always kept up-to-date despite my horrible internet connection and I dont remember any large updates recently.

Also I just noticed, some of my older .txt files are now blank as well. The file size remains the same as if there was text, but when I open the file notepad shows up with NOTHING in it. ?

Any help or tips is greatly appreciated!!! I will check back on here as often as I can, problem every evening unless my internet wont work....which is about 50% of the time.

Thanks guys/girls!

nosignal87, purely a SWAG, possible you've got some sort of nasty (virus, worm/trojan, etc.?). Be aware that a virus and a Trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, an AV detects one it can't clean, other times, it gets missed entirely.
If you need to clean one, Superantispyware (info only. I’m not paid for recommendation. WARNING! FYI, a full scan on mine takes over an hour.) can do the job and you can get it free @:
among other places. They have a Vista compatible version if needed. Dunno about Windows 7 or later.
If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update Superantispyware prior to running. Disable 'restore' after cleaning and run it again (to remove any nasties living there, restart after cleaning) so the nasty doesn't get put back should you later ‘restore’. They just released a new update recently and it changes all the time. Things are in a constant state of flux.
The restore thing is critical. May not be your deal at all, but won't hurt anything to try.
I'd try that first just 'cuz. That'd explain the strange disappearances. Hopefully the originals haven't been damaged. For some reason, anything connected to M$ is a frequent target of nasties. Maybe 'cuz they're in such common use?
Next, I'd get. free Irfanview to open all graphics. It's far and away (IMHO) the best graphics program I've ever run into. Never had any sort of problem with it and I've used it for years. Get it free@:

I would try ---
Get into ADD/Remove Windows Components, then Remove Windows Picture & Fax Viewer. Restart, Then go back in, to Add Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.
