I have taken a lot of pics with my DC, and then saved them to HD,if I select them from My Pictures I only get machine code, but ifI open them with photo explorer there is no problem, any ideas please.

Not sure I understand what you mean when you say 'if I select them from My Pictures'. If you click (or double click) on a picture, what happens? How is that different from opening them with photo explorer? Do youmean you have photo explorer open, and choose file, open? What is the program that is used to open them by 'selecting from My Pictures'? Do they open if you use another program like MS Photo Editor or Photoshop or another photo editing program?
Can you right click on a picture, choose Open With, and then choose a program that works, and then choose 'always use this program to open files of this type', etc.?

When you open from My pictures, which program are they opening in?
If it's not your regular photo editing program, you will need to do a new file association.
Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types. Find the extension of your photos (probably .jpg) & change to the correct program.
Hope this helps!

Thank you all for your help, perhaps I didn't explain myself properly, all I have to do to unload my pics, is plug my DC into my USB, and it comes up with the Media box, do I want to save them, email them, or save them to HD, I chose the latter, they load them into my pictures. If I then go to MY Pictures and click on them, they try to open them in Word, and I only get machine code, but if I open Photo Explorer first, then My Pictures, they access ok, but will not open any videos at all, says it can't find the program that opens it.
In the meantime, I will try the suggestions already given, thank you sll very much for your replies.

To load a picture in Word, you have to use the Insert command, then choose the picture from your My Pictures file. It's much easier to see them in one of the picture viewing programs mentioned above.
