In the UK, (you never stated where you live) you need a live BT Phone Line to be able to use ADSL Broadband, though many providers include both service costs in one package. Unless you live in a Virgin-Media Cable Area, where the Phone Service is optional afaik!

Alternatively in the UK 3Mobile offer 3G Internet (15GB per month £15), though speed is around 1 to 2 Mbps, which is what I use, but I do not run Streaming Media or Download Music/videos

What MWCC says is correct if you live in the UK. Most DSL is provided through a BT telephone line and BT wont supply a telepone line without a telephone service unless you live in one of the areas where the local loop is unbundled and you have no need to go anywhere near BT. But those area are usually in the big cities where there are plenty of customers.

However, once you have paid for line rental, the cost of calls is minimal, zero if you dont make any calls. It is the line rental that costs the money and you are going to have to pay that with or without a phone service.

However, ther is no technical reason why you can't have DSL and no phone service. It depends on the telcoms providers were you are.

If you live in the UK and don't make many calls and are in receipt of pension credit then a BT service ( Iv'e forget what it's called ) is even cheaper than a standard line , Phone BT customer service and ask . the details about £15 a month with the first £5 free and yes you can have broad band " over the top " from a third party supplier such as Plusnet.com £15 per month . The strange thing is mines handled by BT for plus-net and is cheaper than BT's equivalent service .

If you are always on the move , with a laptop . then MWCC solution makes perfect sense although I suspect a LAN cable is always at hand , Just in case ......:-)

>>>can i run dsl thru the phone line without a home phone?<<<
I would say you need a company like att, bellsouth, etc because the line has to be activated. Without that you won't get a dial tone.

I'm under the impression that you need a land line for DSL, at least here in the southern usa you do.

Verison offers wireless satelite connection using a dongle, but it's pretty expensive depending on what service you want.

Satelite , expensive certainly , download speeds great , upload , slower than dialup but an option to keep in mind .

Without that you won't get a dial tone.

You don't need a dial tone for DSL. Just a length of copper wire between your Modem and the DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) . The DSLAM us usualy in the telphone companies exchange but doesn't have to be.
