PHONE DIALER WON"T WORK

Phone dialer (dialer.exe part of WinXP) doesn't work. I get an error message: "Failed trying to connect the call. Does the device have power and dialtone if necessary?" My modem works but I can't make outside calls with it. Any help?

Just to confirm, you are using an analogue Modem and not a Broadband modem. If the latter it wont work. If the former check in Control Panel > Phone and Modems Options and do a diagnostic test on the Modem to check that computer is actually communicating with the Modem. Stuart
