performing automatic IDE configeration

Specs: Windows XP
My assistant was installing drivers on a dell optiplex 745 started bios upgrade by mistake,he switched the machine off on attempt to stop the process,now the machine doesn't boot.all it does is bring a message " performing automatic IDE configuration.I have tried resetting the cmos by removing the cmos battery.please assist

You probably know you should NEVER stop a BIOS update once the update has begun. Can you enter the BIOS & change any settings or have you lost all access to it?

He didn't know that,I cant get to bios it just displays the dell system optiplex 745

Bios version 2.6.4

then halts at performing automatic IDE configurations.a blinking cursor and thats all

If the BIOS was corrupted, I doubt you would even see the Dell splash screen. Are you using a USB keyboard? If you are & your board supports it, try switching to a PS/2 keyboard. That may allow you to get into the BIOS menu. And since the error mentions IDE, try unplugging all IDE cables from the motherboard, then see if the BIOS is accessible.
