i read in a computer magazine that the performance monitoring feature of Windows XP can be turned off permanently by typing "diskperf -N" at the command prompt. i would like to know whether it is absolutely safe to turn off the performance monitoring feature. i hope it does not affect the stability of Windows XP.

It wouldn't hurt anything to turn it off. It just wouldn't allow you to check it in the future if you needed it. Of course unless you turned it back on :)
