Per,
First sorry to hear your SP2 install did not go well but I got a question. Did you have NAV disabled during the install and I mean the big red X threw it.
When I did my install I first backed up what I had not in the last few days. Then I delete all my temp files, temp internet, etc. I blew out all my system restore points and started fresh. You have any other 3rd party programs running in the background as well? Just wondering.
If anyone else has issues, please post and be precise as you can to what went wrong so we can work on fixing the issues.
One other note Per I doubt it was a bad download but ya never know.

Hi KTTD. Yes I had disabled NAV. I also clean the temp file at least twice a day. Closed all the background programs. Didn't del the restore points. I have redownloaded and will try again tomorrow in the safe mode and see if that works. It was weird in that it would boot until loading the desktop, then would go into a loop half way through. Stopped a bunch of startup programs and managed to get a full desktop but the shortcuts wouldn't work. Hope this is not indicative of further problems. Rgds.

I have sp1 slipstreamed with xp pro
to slipstream sp2 on a new disc do i have to put in sp1 also or is sp1 included in the sp2 download when it becomes availible

I'd disable or uninstall any program that hooks deeply into Windows, like programs that create virtual drives (Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120%, ...) or Windows Customizers (Style XP, ...) or ......

The XP SP2 contains all the fixes of SP1 so you can disregard it once you have SP2.

KTTD, Per, Et Al,
I'll post this here, but if you feel it should be in it's own thread Kevin, let me know.
I just did the SP2 install on my demo computer and when it rebooted, I got this error:
"Windows could not start because the following file was missing or corrupt:
C:\Windows\INF\Biosinfo.inf
"You can attempt to repair by starting Windows setup with the original CD Rom and select 'R" at the first screen"
I haven't done this yet to give you guys a chance to ask any further questions on points that I've missed. I am also open to alternate suggestions. (keep it clean, Per) :) LOL
Thanks
Musky

Musky,
Check this out...

Thanks for the link Kev, I had disabled my Norton Anti virus before installing SP2(Yes, big red X) :)
Now, I can't get back into Windows to try uninstalling Norton as the Windows article suggests. I get the same error message when I try to boot up in safe mode. I am now running "Chkdsk /R" from the repair console, we'll see if this works.
Next I may try to go "to the last known good configuration" although I don't know what that will do to SP2!
I'll keep you posted.

The link below contains over hundreds (if not thousands) of MSKB articles that went into SP2. I guess its time for us to go back to school and figure them out :-)
MSKB Article 811113 / List of fixes included in Windows XP SP2 (08/09/04)

UPDATE:
The "chkdsk /r" didn't work, even though it says it "found and fixed errors". I get the same error message as above.
Now trying to "repair the current Windows installation" during the XP setup.
If this works, I know it will remove the SP2 update I just did. If so, I'll try uninstalling Norton completely and then reinstall the SP2 upgrade.
It's going to be a fun night!

hi
i have legal version.i was not the only 1 having problems with the product code.i use win xp pro sp1 corprate edition.
well i guess ill see when i install it.
keltik

I have downloaded and sp2 and make a XP Pro SP2 slipdisk, but now I'm afraid to put it on my second older test machine because of all the trouble everyone is having. Maybe later.hohum

keltikgent,
I had problems too during a couple revisions of the beta. Also have a very legal OEM copy here...not corporate. It fixed itself a few revisions later.
domass,
Have been using SP2 since the first beta release and have had absolutely no problems when I do a clean slipstreamed install.

Morning all,
Just a quick note for people to check computer mfg's websites to see if there are patches to be installed before updating to SP2.
I have visited various Tech Forums and Mfg websites and there are a lot of patches and expected problems relating to SP2. HP, Nortons,Intel,IBM, various drivers, and programs will be affected.
Bringing back nightmares of when SP1 first came out!!
I will stick with SP1 for a while ( coward that I am ).
Have a good day,
Xdon

Morning everyone,
Keltikgent: I wasn't suggesting that you had an illegal version, I just found that article and thought I'd share it, it was just coincidence that it posted after your last post.
Well, I tried a repair and that just created a loop of restarting and then getting to the same setup point and restarting again.
As I said, I have time to experiment with this machine as it's a Demo/display in my store. I also used the "disable" command at the recovery console to shut down any services that may be conflicting with SP2, including Norton, but still no luck.
I am now going to do a clean install of XP Pro and then do the SP2 upgrade without anything else loaded to see what happens.
I'll keep posting results.
Later!

Hi All- I will try to keep it clean for Musky's delicate sensibilities. LOL!
Retried this morning. Found a weak PSU and replaced it. Same old thing. Get to the desktop and it goes into a loop when about half the startup items are loaded. Works in the safe mode. Disabled all startup items and still no joy. Appears to be drwtsn.exe [doctor watson] is freezing the boot. Can't shut it down in task manager , keeps coming back. I am back to SP1 and going to remain there for a while. Best of luck.

Hey Per,
I only said that because I left myself open when I said "I am also open to alternate suggestions". LOL
I reinstalled XP Pro on my demo computer and then just loaded the motherboard drivers and then SP2.
Everything seems to be working fine now. I reinstalled Norton and again, things seem to be working although the new Windows "security adviser' cannot detect if Norton is monitoring or not, so I shut that function down.
Per: I didn't see any details on the problems you were having with SP2, only Kevin's answer to you. Did you post the details and I missed them? If not, please do so we can compare problems :)

Hi Musky- "Alternate suggestions" LOL!
My problems are spelled out in the above post. Boots to the desktop then goes into a loop half way through loading. I think it is a driver or possibly Norton. I disabled Norton but it still loads a couple of things. If I wanted to pursue it I guess I would uninstall Norton before doing SP2, but I am in the procrastination mode. Quite happy with the machines as they run. Behind a router and all the other goodies and never had a problem. Think I'll wait for the cleanup. Rgds.
PS- are those the same voices I hear? They are very rude and nasty at times. LOL!

Your's are rude too???
Mine sound a lot like my X wife!
I just loaded SP2 on a customer's computer with Norton just disabled and so far so good. I don't think Norton was my problem, but it's hard to tell!
Musky

" I dont think Norton was my problem" Yeah, It's all a mystery to me.
If they sound like your ex-wife you are suffering from paranoic depression. That was supposed to go with her. LOL!.

It should have, everything else did!
On my Demo computer, the SP2 Security adviser icon near the clock has disappeared. I thought it was kinda cool, I wonder where it went. :)

It is really good that our "top guns" are getting along again.
My SP2 is running fine on my athlon xp3200+/1gig, and ok but a little slower than sp1 on my p3 750mhz/512mb Portege. So far so good.
Will you run a full featured firewall instead of the sp2 offering??
Borderrose

Hi Borderrose. Thanks. I personally am going to wait. As you see from my posts I am one of the few that is having problems. Glad to hear you are up and running. Rgds.

"It is really good that our "top guns" are getting along again"
What are you referring to? Per and I have always gotten along, in fact, I don't usually have problems with anybody on here, with a small exception of one person last spring :)
My second installation of SP2 is running smoothly and I also put it on two customers machines with no further problems so far...
Musky
If the voices inside my head paid rent, I'd be rich!

Hi Musky,
Sorry if I offended, I was not refering to you at all. We just had a little bit of a forum tussle last week with a few of the regulars venting about forum management issues. I made my comment because most of the people involved in the issue have posted to this thread, just like the good old days.
Glad to hear that everything is ok with your sp2 installs.
Borderrose

I have the same biosinfo.inf missing or corrupt message - stupidly didn't disable NAV.
I now have a further issue that when I try to boot from XP CD to start recovery console or attempt to repair I get a blue-screen after setup loads all files as it tries to start Windows - 'A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer'....
This again is a perfectly legal OEM installed version of XP Pro.
Anyone have any ideas without FDISK or similar?!?
Thanks.
