I'm trying to retrieve data off of a corrupted hard drive. The one folder that is corrupted is the documents and settings folder.

When I try to access this folder, I get an access denied message and the folder itself reads as 0 kb. When I run chkdsk, it stops 2/3 through phase 4 at which point the HD dissappears from My Computer and is not recognized by the machine anymore. However... When I run a defrag report, files from within this folder appear in the report noting size, fragment count... So these files must be intact and exist on the drive, however it may be damaged...

Does anyone have an idea how I can recover these files?

How are you trying to access this folder?

Try one of these file recovery programs.

PC Inspector (freeware)

Zero assumption Recovery
http://www.z-a-recovery.com
The demo is limited
It will only recover 'up to' four folders per run
But you can make multiple runs

Access denied doesn't mean the data is corrupt. It means you don't have permission to access the data. Take ownership of the folder, and that should fix the problem and allow you to copy the data to wherever you need it to be.
