CPU/Ram: Celeron 1.2GHz / 256MB RA
Product: 2002 / IBM R31
Comment:

My IBM ThinkPad R31 (2002 make with USB 1.1) with Windows XP Home just cannot properly drive the PCMCIA Card named

"Option GlobeTrotter Combo EDGE".

The Option's GlobeTrotter Mobility Manager software installs the necessary drivers correctly and it works on any other laptop with USB 2.0, though the presence of USB 2.0 might just coincidentally might have worked it.

The Wireless LAN (WLAN) of the card works fine, but the GPRS connectivity doesn't work because the "PCI Serial Port" still shows up with the yellow exclamation in the device manager.

At the website of Option there seems to be no drivers specially for this case and couldn't find it anywhere else.

What are your suggestions? Thanks.

When you get ""PCI Serial Port" still shows up with the yellow exclamation in the device manager." on a laptop, that indicates you don't have the proper drivers for the PCMCIA socket installed.

When you install the proper drivers,
"PCI Serial Port" disappears and a "PCMCIA socket" or similar entry appears in Device Manager.

If you no longer have the orginal brand name software installation on this computer, you probably need to load the drivers to properly support the PCMCIA socket. Those drivers are included along with the proper main chipset drivers.
Your problem has nothing to do with the presence or absence of USB 2.0 support.

If the orginal brand name software installation is still on a computer, the proper drivers are already there, but many people these days have re-loaded their brand name computer by using a regular Windows CD, which does not have all the necessary drivers built into it.

Whenever you load Windows from a regular Windows CD (or DVD) from scratch, after Setup is finished you must load the drivers for the mboard, particularly the main chipset drivers, in order for Windows to have the proper drivers for and information about your mboard hardware, including it's AGP or PCI-E, ACPI, and hard drive controller support. If you have a generic system and have the CD that came with the mboard, all the necessary drivers are on it. If you load drivers from the web, brand name system builders and mboard makers often DO NOT have the main chipset drivers listed in the downloads for your model - in that case you must go to the maker of the main chipset's web site, get the drivers, and load them.
