Hello,
I'm trying to install a PCI video card on my HP. I bought an ATI Rage 128 Pro 32mbSDRAM 64 bit card. I followed the HP guide to installing a card, uninstalled the display adapter, switched BIOS to PCI video (there is no disable onboard video on the bios). When I put the card in and plug the monitor in and start it up, there is nothing on the screen. The computer is running but just keeps beeping and restarting. I tried changing the power supply from 200w to 400w just in case there was a shortage of power, no difference.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks.

How long ago did you buy the card? Because this card was designed to run on a Win98 or ME machine, i think you will have to get the xp driver from the ATI web site (ati.amd.com). A quick look tells me they are available for download.

this has nothing to do with the operating system or the correct drivers. He isn't even getting the OS to load yet so how could he install the XP drivers.
Herc0629, it sounds like the card isn't seated properly. Open up the case, remove and reseat the card.

Hey Kurt,
Thanks for the response, I've had the card out and in about 3 different times and in 2 different PCI slots same thing everytime.
I'm wondering if I have a dead card.Thanks.

It's quite possible, do you have another system you can test the card in? Or another card you can test in this system?

Hey Kurt,
I put the card in another system and exactly the same thing happened, going to return it and get a different model.
Thanks for the help!

All i was saying is i had this card about 5 years ago.. If you go to the ATI website and read up on the system requirements is states Win98 and Win ME, if you want to run it on an xp machine you need to download the updated drivers first, install and then once the drivers are installed then put the card into your machine and it will work, the reason it wont boot is the card, and being pci all tests have to pass before the os will load, if any pci card is not working most of the time the machine wont boot. So why would you be bothering with that card any way, these days i dont think you would even look at less than 256, if you are upgrading from the onboard to play games this will not cut it with new games and my view is 1, HP have never had a machine that can cope with game graphics (if thats what you want, let me guess the computer reboots when playing games??) and 2, 128 a waste of time.

Giarc,
The monitor connection on the mother board has a problem, the screen goes blank all the time unless you wiggle and hold the monitor cable in position. The computer isn't used for gaming at all, bought the card for 20 bucks, just to see if I could get the screen back up without replacing the board.
Thanks

Sorry if i offended but this info would have been nice in the original post. With gaming and connecting a laptop to a big screen i have noticed the pins in the monitor cable slowly push into the housing and this will cause the same problem and by wiggling the cable they connect and disconnect, also if you want to remove the MOB turn it over and look at where the monitor connection seats on the board, sometimes the solder will crack around the pins, a quick dab with a hot soldering iron will fix this...
