Your PCI communications device is a thing that allows your computer to communicate with PCI cards (ie. your modem). Best thing to do, if possible, is contact the store you got your computer from, and ask them what the name of your PCI communications device is. Then go to a search engine, and search for drivers for your PCI commmunications device. Or you could check out some of the driver sites, driverguide.com , it's free, but you have to join :P There are others, like windrivers, but they're no longer free :(

If your system will boot, right click on my computer and go to properties, then to hardware and look for any yellow ? . If you have any hardware issues this is where they will show up. if this is just a pci controler issue then XP has several pci controlers or you could use the default, there are some controlers which have not as of yet made the updated drivers for XP, this is usually the case of several Rockwell chip sets. go to http://microsoft.com/HCL.asp and search for your modem under modems and then by name. You should however be able to solve this issue by just using the control panel as outlined in the beginning of this advise column. if you still need assistance email me. I have had plenty of experience with this OS from conception to birth and beyond.

I currently have the same proble since i upgraded form 98 to 2000. The problem lies with your modem driver. You should go to your modem's manufacturer's website and look for a driver for the modem. The driver usually comes with the modem driver. This took me about 5 formats and a week to figure out. Hope this helps.

1. go to device drivers and check for any conflicts

2. un-install the drivers

3. re-install by asking the service vendor/ resource CD.

I had to do a clean install of Windows 2000 Pro, and I, too, need the PCI controller. When I run the US Robotics CD (which worked in the past), but it doesn't set up the modem. COuld it be a bad modem? If not, where can I get the proper driver?
