"Ironically talking":
THANK YOU MICROSOFT!!! YOU DESIGNED WINDOWS XP WITH NO SUPPORT FOR CREATIVE DXR2 AND DXR3 DVD CARDS. NOW WHAT?!? DO I HAVE TO SPEND MONEY BUYING ANOTHER UP-TO-DATE DVD CARD IF I WANT DVD BY HARDWARE ON MY COMPUTER? I DO WANT TO UPGRADE TO WINDOWS XP, JUST BECAUSE I KNOW THE NEXT GAMES ARE NOT GONNA BE COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 98. BUT I CAN´T JUST DISCARD MY DVD BOARD THAT I BOUGHT IN 1999. JUST 2 YEARS AND IT´S OBSOLETE? MICROSOFT!!! YOU HAVE TO READ THIS!!! BILL GATES!!! YOU HAVE TO READ THIS!!! I WANNA BUY YOUR WINDOWS XP, BUT AS I TESTED, I HAVE TO THINK TWICE BEFORE DOING IT!!!

Don't know about you but I had a DXR3 board and it degraded my desktop so much that I had to remove it. I looked for a software solution and both WinDVD & PowerDVD gave me a better picture than I got with the DXR3 board and they don't degrade your desktop.

I had even called creative because I thought I was doing something wrong and their solution was to run my 19" Sony monitor at 800x600@60 all the time. Well, that fixed the degradation problem but I wasn't going to live with that! Out came the DXR3 and I never looked back.

What processor should I have for a good frame rate? I mean, I want to watch DVD as clean as I have today with windows 98 and Hardware Decoder (Dxr2). I have Duron 600, ASUS A7V133 Motherboard, 128Mb RAM, NVidia TNT2 M64 (32Mb) AGP, CMI8738 sound card, Ultra ATA100 HD (20Gb)

I ran into the exact same thing with my Dxr3 card in XP. I tried the W2k drivers, but it froze up and I had to kill the app. As for the Dxr3's functionality in 98 and W2k, I've had no problems at all--runs like a dream, much better than a software decoder. I never heard of a software decoder allowing you to output a crisp, smooth picture to tv. If anyone finds out a way to make this work, please post!

I have a Dxr3 Decoder and my problem is that PC DVD Software is not responding on windows XP when i insert a DVD title. When the drive is empty it works fine. I use the Win2K Beta driver from Creative. PowerDVD works fine. I think that Creative should make a Win XP driver or reconstruct the software soon because i'm very close to throw my dxr3 card out of the window (the real one).

I too have the same problem with WinXP and Creative DXR3 card. I tried a fresh install of XP (Not upgrade), and can't even install the Creative player. The installer can't find the card (Using the Win2k beta drivers).

On solution is to use the drivers for the Realmagic Hollywood+ drivers and software. The are the same card just with a different bios. You will also need "zone select" in order to bypass the bios check. Other than that they work fine. The software also plays sVCD and MiniDVDs. :-)

Mark.. (reply 8) suggested using the Hollywood Magic Drivers... same card, different logo. But (for me) this does not work due, I suspect, to the id of the card versus the signature of the driver. Mark, did this work for you? If so, what steps did you take to install and get round the apparent copatibility problems.

Adding a XP region-free software/patch (like Remote Selector, possibly next release - remember XP is VERY NEW! Let time to crack development!) wich bypasses Dxr3 ROM and all will works great!

OK kiddies listen up. I got me a DXR3 paperweight also, I am using win2k right now and i am gonna upgrade to XP soon, however there are no goddamn drivers for this P.O.S. card that Creative pulled out of their ass. Anyway if anyone comes into contact with drivers that actually function, not those bootleg other company drivers that forced me to reinstall windows ok, no matter what i do it gives me a fatal blue screen of death error in windows2k trying to install those bootleg fake drivers. If anyone has any suggestions I'll check my mail here at school on blizroms@hotmail.com or blizroms@eden.rutgers.edu, please I implore you respond ASAP if you have any ideas, thanks again. I have just installed windows XP and sure enough the DXR2 card was not picked up. However, I used the WDM driver (for Win98SE2) which also works with Win2K, and it picked up the card fine. I had to re-install the creative software that came with this driver. Using Remote Selector (1.7x) [from www.visualdomain.net] I can start the software with any region and it works fine, as does the TV OUT. No crashes. These WDM drivers are available from the Creative web-site and are the Win98 SE2 drivers. Also download the latest player software. Not sure about the DXR3, though I've heard you can use the H+ drivers to get it working.

Fiz.

DXR2 Users with Windows XP.

Download the latest dxr2 player software (I say latest but these were released about 2 years ago!)

ftp://ftp.europe.creative.com/pub/creative/drivers/cdrom/dvdewup.exe

When you extract the files, there will be a driver directory. Use the WDM driver in XP, believe it or not it works! The card should be picked up fine. Install the player software from the download. User Remote selector if you have multi-region dvd's. Both me and rcode71 have got this working with no problems. Remember, install the WDM driver NOT Win98 or WINNT drivers!!

Here's just another addition to all the other users who aren't happy with Creative Labs. DVD is a very popular product, especially now, you would think they would have a driver by now. But after hours and hours of experimenting, I did manage to do a half a** job in installing the DXR3 on windows XP, it may work better for you guys out there. Download the Windows 2000 drivers from www.creativelabs.com and install them FIRST!!. Second, run the PC-DVD program and it should install successfully. However, you might experience the same problems running it as I did. First of all, if you are running PC-DVD through the analog audio channel, the audio will be very distorted. Or if you have a Sound Blaster Live card, and you run the audio through the 4-point surround sound, you may not get any audio at all, at least when I tried it. Either way, I got picture but no sound. Give it a try and post your results, perhaps we could help each other because I gave up on Creative Labs, they're no help!

In reply to Hollando (Response 32 and 33):

The best thing to do is go to Device manager. (Right Click my computer, Properties, Hardware and Device Manager)

If you have the DXR2 board listed but with a yellow exclamation, then delete the device. Re-boot to let XP pick it up again and install these drivers (from Device Manager).

If there is an unknown device called 'Multimedia Video device...' then update the driver for that device (using the have disk method).

In both cases, point to the WDM directory.

The Add Hardware wizard is no good as you are forcing it to find hardware. It should already exist in Device Manager, albeit as an unrecognised device. By installing the drivers against the unrecognised device you should have better luck.

Failing that, not sure what else to try. Maybe it's a combination of IBM crappy hardware with a sub standard (even by Microsofts standards) o/s. Oh and the unsupported DXR2 board from Creative should get a mention ;-)

Creative's offical responce to me is:

Creative Labs is not currently in a position to provide complete technical support for
installation or operation of our products in the Microsoft Windows XP operating
system. However, Windows XP contains built in driver support for a number of our
products. Since Creative Labs does not have downloadable drivers specifically
tested for compatibility with Windows XP, our recommendation is to use Windows
XP default drivers with products that are recognized. We have created a page on
our web site to keep customers informed about our Windows XP driver release
schedule:

Got my dxr3 working almost perfectly in xp.

Went to the holywood+ website and downloaded the newest drivers and software for xp. Then went to dvddigest and downloaded the buil 4.11 of zone selector.

To install the drivers i went to add new hardware, sound and multimedia devices then have disk. Windows tells you that they are not certified or something but we know better than windows do we not?

After the drivers and a reboot i installed the software but didn't run it.

To play DVD's load up zone selector, point to where the holywood dvd player software is and load up the dvd from inside zone. Sorted.

The first time I played a dvd there was no picture but worked after a reboot.

The best thing is i prefer the software from realmagic to that of creative anyway! And i can probably use the realmagic serial remote which rules btw...

Hope this helps.

I have not seen any information regarding the development or release projection of the XP DxR3 drivers. You may want to try looking in our DVD (MMUK) news group. I have seen a number of users who have found easy work arounds for getting their DxR3 to work in XP.

This would be all well and good if my newsgroup server allowed me to get there.

If you get an MCI error, run task manager and look for a process called ctfmon.exe. If that is running, end it and then try playing the file again. I use a dxr3 board, but that works for me every time. Something about ending that process makes the MCI error go away. good luck

DXR3 works with XP

The two solutions I know:

1. Follow the Instuctions on this link: http://apachez.hn.org/purpleman/dxr3hp.html. I works, but in this case your're not using the newest XP-Driver and the newest DVD-Station. The Driver and the Software is written for Win2000. May be there is trouble with XP.

2. Install the newest Hollywood XP-Driver and DVD-Station on this link: http://www.sigmadesigns.com/support/download_hollywood_plus_win2000.htm (both files, disk1 and disk2. The DVD-Station doesn't work with ZoneSelect. But if you're registered User of RemoteSelector use the Vers. 1.79. of Erwin van den Berg on this link: http://www.visualdomain.net/.
It works very fine and I think it's the best Solution. The only Problem, you've to pay $14 USD for registration.

I hope my comment helps you. Sorry for my bad english. I'm a german guy.

I followed the advice of Fiz responses 30 and 36 and it worked. Thanks so much for the help. I will think twice about ever buying anything from Creative again. Their tech support sucks!

I tried fiz's suggestion, but still no support for the decoder card. I noticed there is open source for the dxr 2 board. Unfortunatly I do not program. If anyone has working dxr 2 board drivers pass them on.

Windows XP doesnt work with certain hardware because the legacy code that is in os's like win98 and winme that made it unstable has been taken out. therefore win xp will not allow dodgy software drivers like those supplied with the dxr3 card. im still waiting for a decent version of the drivers for my winxp install, as at the moment the beta drivers from creative cause my computer to blue screen with a stop error every single time after installing.

I am one of the many unlucky ppl that have a Dxr2 card and 5x Player, and now that Creative have released the Dxr3 drivers I am wondering as to whether we are able to use these drivers with the Dxr2 board, or is it just that the board is old creative is basicly telling us that we should bugger off??? I am starting to get really annoyed with both Microsoft and Creative...hmm I should go linux that way the computer won't crash and there are drivers for the Dxr2 card as well.

Tron.
