I don't have the vitals on my pc. I was told that the motherboard was fried. What do you think? We had 2 recent tornados in my area and 1 hit home. All I had protecting my pc was a surge protector and it was in the hibernation mode. First attempt to use after storm, I had to try and turn it on about 5 times. Each time it would start up and then shut off. I walked away and come back and it powered completely up. When the next storm came, I turned it completely off but it wouldn't come on this time after multiply tries. Took it into Best Buy, as it is an emachine. The tech said that I fried the motherboard - power surge, storm, lightning, etc. Is this correct? Gotta replace it or something. I am a pc dummy! Help!

Yes, there is chance that the motherboard is fried.
But there is also a chance that only the power supply is dead.
Surge protectors something have warranty to replace equipment have you checked this out.

How old is the computer?
Is it still under warranty?

I personally would not trust some of the techs at these place. I was told the same thing and all that was wrong with the pc was the power supply was blown.

As far as being a pc dummy we all start off that way. It up to you if you want to stay that way. There is nothing wrong in being this way it just is that you are depend on others to solve you computer problems.

IF you want to change a power supply it really is not that hard. But that is up to you, maybe you have a friend that is more computer knowledgeable. Any get back here if you want more help.

You don't produce enough in the way of info, but I would have to say that it's a little hard to fry a mobo when powered off. A freak lightning strike through the power line MIGHT do it but the voltage spike would have to pass through the power supply first in order to get to the mobo. So I would suspect the power supply long before the mobo.

In any event, (no offence to best buy people) but Best Buy is not the best place to be asking those kinds of questions.

I am not sure where this subject belongs, but deals with start up, instead of opening to my home page on the internet I get a blank page with heading that says the following: you should not be here! this is the link that appears in my address.
http://205.209.167.44/~magic3/testz0r.htm

I have used adaware,my virus removal and spyware doctor and cannot remove it. also tried to system restore back to a month ago, then two months ago and it will not allow the restore.

Any help to remove this?? And just exactly what would this be??

Thanks in advance.

Tanner231, you should have started your own post, it's a bit daunting at first I know. This should help.

Download HiJackThis, install & run to get a log file. Don't fix anything.
You then post the log file at the site provided below & it will tell you what to fix.

Or,

HijackThis is a program used by experienced users in order to detect browser hijackers. It allows you to identify any sort of spyware and malware (as well as some trojan horses and worms). This is achieved by scanning special zones of the registry as well as the hard disk drive, the results being listed in a structured window. Another feature of HijackThis is the creation of a log file, which can be saved as a simple text file and opened by any text editor (notepad as default). Until now, inexperienced users, who could not analyze the log file by themselves, had no other choice than posting it in a specialized forum and to hope that a more experienced user takes some time to analyze it. The script presented on this page is a way to analyze your log without help from the outside: simply copy/paste the content of the log file in the textbox below and hit the analyze button.
