hey

Basically...my system has slowed right down. before when it used to take seconds to load my pc fully up, now takes minutes. my computer keeps hanging between tasks and i cant even play games or do much else cause it just seems to lag really really bad!

Far as i know this is my pc specs
3.2ghz processor
1gb dual RAM
radeon 9800 pro 128mb vid card
sata raptor 10,000 rpm 75gb hard drive

My pc SHOULD not be slowing down!

What i have done is tried full defragging, full spyware scans, virus scans, uninstalled all programs i do not use, and modified my msconfig to only run the processes i need to.
If i look at my task list, shows i have 27 process running..which i thought was good as not many!

Apart from that i dont know what else to do, my pc has slowed down that much i cant do much at all, even browsing internet is pretty bad!

I did think of reinstalling windows xp fully, maybe i got bad drivers and such a mess now i dont know, but it wont let me. when i load the windows xp installation, you have to press f6 to load additional drivers cause its a sata drive. well...i go to the manufacturers website, tried the drivers there for my model number and guess what...NONE of them work, so i cant even reinstall windows to see if its software or hardware based errors....!

My hard dirve is a western digital wd740gd.

Apart from that, i guess im asking for help on what to do in this matter. I have no idea if its software or hardware based error and i have no way of knowing unless i of course take it to a pc tech guy, but that of course costs money and im sorta low on fund at the moment.

Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated! i need my pc running smoothly as quick as possible as i do some work on it, and its disrupting my ability to even do that

If at first you don't succeed, simply give up and let me do it!!!

I have not tried the following but who knows: Premium Booster.

It can only be installed today from the "Giveawayoftheday" site. See the comments on the "More" page.

Have you checked the system logs?
These should show any proceses that are having problems.
In my experience a slow down like this would point to a service failing and then retrying constantly.

Oh, that power button...

Or a bad memory module?

Have you cleaned the inside of your case lately and checked to make sure all the connections and parts and pieces are snug?

Have you added any new programs lately? Sometimes a program will replace important system files with its own and cause major problems.

Crofton has a good point. I have seen computers that aren't connected all the time to the internet, so when a program is trying to "call home," it will tie up the system resources. When you look at processess running in Windows Task Manager, what processes have high numbers in the "CPU" column?

hey

thats the thing AKBessy, when i check task manager...cpu usage is at 0 percent, of course with the occassional 1-2% popping up! in this respect there is NOTHING there slowing it down. the cpu usage hardly ever even hits 100% so its not like something is using up all my resources there.

On the programs side of things, i occasionally install the odd program here and there, but all i do mainly now is use office for work stuff...and heaven behold..of course i play online gaming lol! but that never runs at 100% even then!

How do i check the system logs? maybe there might be a answer there.

I dont know much about the hardware side of things, but yes i did look inside my box, cleaned al lthe dust out etc before and cleaned the fans! i checked all the plugs before and they all seem to be connected right, then again, i dunno how it should be connected...but they in the same place as i first got the pc years ago.

Other than that...the bad memory module may be what is causing it...who knows. im gonna try take 1 ram chip out and see how it runs on a 512mb stand alone chip, see how it goes! if it does the same, i swap chips..! if still the same i let u know! this is so frustrating lol.

IF my pc runs the same, what else could it be?

well i took out both memory chips, put only 1 in, rebooted...! and guess what! when xp starts, the bar at the bottom..AGES ago the bar went across 2 and a half times then thats all i saw of that screen! lately its been looping around 8-10 times! this time..back to 2 and a half :D i was rapped, quickest i seen it boot up in a long time.

I then took out thta chip, put the other in and same result, how good is that!

i then put both back in again, and guess what, same result lol! im guessing now my only problem was..maybe the chips got knocked or sumthing? lol! i got everest ultimate 2006 version, this is my REAL speed now after the test.

1 chip
read write copy latency
memory 3042mb 3101mb 2630mb 93.0ns
l1 cache 51125mb 14646mb 23750mb .6
l2 cache 21171mb 13040mb 18612mb 6.6

at the bottom it also says the info
cpu type-intel pen 4 (northwood hyperthreading socket 478)
CPU CLOCK-3215.4mhz (orignal 3200)
CPU FSB-201.0mhz (original 200)
cpu multiplier 16.0x
cpu stepping d1
memory bus 201.0 mhz
dram fsb ratio 1:1
memory type-single channel ddr402 sdram(2.5-3-3-8)
chipset intel canterwood i875p
motherboard-gigabyte ga-8ik1100 v2.0

so from people who know about this sort of stuff how does that rate? i also did the same test with 2 chips in! heres the results

2 ram chips
read write copy latency
memory 5240 4253 4059 88.9
l1 cache 51118 14647 23764 .6
l2 cahce 22057 13299 18911 6.5

how does this rate?

well anyway least its all runnin good again..got so worried, wish i worked this out sooner lol!

P.S at the moment my pc seems to be lagging a little bit...so i keep testing in case
