PC SHUTS DOWN & WON'T TURN ON?

Hewlett Packard Home Edit

Specs: Windows XP, 512
My computer's been acting weird lately. When I turn it on and go into my account it waits for a couple of seconds then it just shuts down by itself...So i press the power button and nothing happens it just stays off.
So I unplug the ac plug wait for a couple of seconds then plug it back in and press the power button and it works but it keeps doing the same thing.
Click on account, wait for a few seconds while loading files, shuts off by itself again.

Also before I forget I took it to a person that fixes computers he replaced the power supply and it worked fine until the 3rd day it did the same thing again...won't take it back to the technician because he doesn't know what it is he's just guessing.

Any answers?

this happened to me. reconnect all the cables and turn it back on. this turned it back on for me. it still turns off by itself sometimes, but not as often and it has never not turned back on anymore.

(however it is very annoying while playing in online gaming tournaments, haha)

First of all, have you tried an sfc /scannow yet? If that doesn't work, you may want to try an XP repair installation. Those will only work if you have an XP disc handy, as you'll be asked to insert it to replenish faulty files.

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

"Click on account, wait for a few seconds while loading files, shuts off by itself again."

Does it happen with other accounts?

The fact that it will not turn on again until you unplug it for a while, means the power supply overload breaker tripped.
Try disconnecting all the drives.
Then try pulling cards and RAM.
If it fails with only the motherboard connected, it's probably the problem.

I have seen similar symptoms to this where the machine will not finish booting up before it shuts down. What is was for me was a bad motherboard -- The capicitors on the motherboard were faulty (you could visually see this as they were bulged and leaking) and as soon as I replaced the Motherboard the issue went away.

One question though -- when your PC shuts itself off does the Power light on the front of the PC stay on? and if so is it steady green? Blinking or Steady Orange?

just a thought

Well one time the whole computer turned off even the power light in front of the pc.

On other ocassions only the monitor turns off but the pc power light is on. I move the mouse around nothing happens.

I opened the tower and cleaned it up maybe I need to do the same thing with the monitor. Don't you think?

I wouldnt open that monitor at any cost. Even if it has been unplugged for days it can still have enough current to kill a full grown man. If the monitor goes black but the power light on the monitor stays on either green or amber/orange it is most likely a mother board issue. if the monitor's power light goes out completely try getting a monitor from a friend or family member to test.

best of luck
