Last years I bought a HP A1550 desktop. After a few months the PC started rebooting itself.Sometimes it would happen 5 times in a row on a cold start,other times it would happen once a week.I contacted HP & tech support made me test my motherboard,HD & memory-All tests passed but the problem persisted.
They then made me reset the BIOS & then format my PC to no avail.
They then replaced my motherboard.All was fine for a few weeks until it started again.HP then replaced my motherboard again,replaced the ram & power supply.For months I have had no problems but it has started restarting again.
Sometimes the computer restarts but doesn’t go back into windows,the screen stays blank.I cannot restart the computer via the keyboard,nor can I turn the pc off by the power supply button,I have to pull the cord out of the socket for the PC to switch off.
I have run every possible virus scan & my PC is clean.I am positive that none of my software is conflicting.
Can anyone please help me because I don’t want to buy another PC.

Have you checked your power settings? Are standby or hibernation enabled?

Have you checked the Battery ?

Make sure that wall outlet has a tight fit on any plugs plugged into them. They do wear out.

When the motherboard was replaced, did it come with the CPU and HS/fan installed ? In addition to the suggestions above, it's possible that the CPU could be overheating.

Overheating might well be a problem, but it is a bit strange that the OP has to "pull the cord out of the socket for the PC to switch off"

Keep it away from any heaters, and open a window.

Then let us know how often it is the case that you must pull the cord to shut it down.

Thnx 4 responding so quickly.
I have long suspected that it is a heating issue as well.This morning it restarted again so I decided 2 open her up & have a look inside.The Fan on top of the power supply was covered in dust.Completely covered! It explains why the pc was hot as hell inside despite only being on for a few minutes.
I cleaned all the dust out & now the PC is running really quite.
However,it just restarted itself again. Upon rebooting itself a window came up telling me that "windows has recovered from a major error." The error included the following.

The plugs r all plugged in tight,the motherboard came with the CPU & HS/Fan installed.
The PC is away from heaters & a window.The thing is,I had a IBM Desktop in the exact same location as this PC & never had any of these problems.The IBM was a really old/slow/cheap PC yet I never had these problems.

Hibernation is enabled in the power setting.This is a desktop,not a laptop.

As for how many times I have to pull the plug to switch the PC off…I really can’t say how often it happens.It mostly reboots itself.It is very intermittent.

After cleaning the dust out of the desktop, the PC was definitely running quitter.
I was positive that the build up of dust was preventing the fans from cooling my PC & this was the reason why my PC was restarting itself.I thought that this had rectified the problem but after a couple of minutes of surfing the net the PC restarted itself again.So,cleaning out the dust & allowing the fans to run properly didn't relieve the problem.My PC is still restarting itself.
When the computer restarted itself,windows loaded & then a box appeared telling me that “windows has recovered from a major error”
Then another box appeared telling me that microsoft prepared an error report which I incl above.

Note: I have been using my PC for a few hours now with no problems.As I have said before,this is very unpredictable behaviour.

It can still be the power supply. Just because they replaced it doesn't mean the one they put in is good. Same is true with the RAM or RAM sockets. They all can cause a computer to restart intermittently.

So does the earth being made by a "big bang" actually make sense??

How often do you have to "pull the cord" to shut it down?

Ah' look. That's too much to have to put up with. Bring it back. Tell them you would prefer a computer that works without you having to be so put out. Is'nt that what you paid for?

when you clean out the power supply fan did you clean out the cpu fan? try booting it with the cover off and see if all the fans are running. it maybe the cpu fan is dieing.causing it ti heat up. also could be a bad themopaste connection between the cpu and the cpu cooler. try mbm (motherboard monitor) and watch your cpu temps.http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311

Hi supertrucker,yes mate,I cleaned out the CPU fan.I even restarted it w/ the cover off & the fans were running.

Thank you all for ur time & feedback but I will buy a new PC on Tuesday.I don't need the added aggravation.
The lesson for 2day is; STAY AWAY FROM HP DESKTOPS !!!
