OS: Windows XP Pro
CPU/Ram: Dual 1Ghz PIII, 512mb ram
Product: Compaq
Comment:

When I shut down my computer, it shuts down and everything turns off exept the PSU. Then about 5 seconds later it starts up again. Nothing in the BIOS seems to be of any use (no "wake on LAN" or anything). This computer had the same problem before I upgraded it to XP from 2000. Nothing in the registry seems to do the trick either. If anyone knows something that I am missing here, please relpy. Feel free to ask any questions.

PS: When I tell it to go into standby, the PSU fan does go off and nothing appears to be running. Don't know if that is of any use to anyone.

Do you have Roxio "easy CD creator" installed?

No I do not have Roxio "easy CD creator". This computer has almost nothing on it. Like I said I just installed the XP pro OS and then the updates. Other than this shutting down issue, the computer works like a dream. It boots up extremely fast and everything opens almost instantly.

Just something to try ---
Restart computer into BIOS,
go to Advanced in the Menu Bar,
select Power On Options in that list,
select "After Power Loss",
change ON to OFF,
move to File in the Menu Bar,
select "Save changes and Exit"

Your BIOS may be slightly different.

DUST collects inside computers, and can cause hardware
damage, overheating, faulty fans, faulty drives
Is yours clean.????

Thanks for the replies. I went into the BIOS and found that option to already be set as OFF. For the heck of it, I tryed turning it to ON, but no change.

Everything seems to shut itself down exept the PSU (which I can still hear running). Then seconds later everthing comes back on. Could it be something hardware related, because this same problem was occuring even before I wiped it clean with the new OS.

Google to "xp shutdown.exe" or "shutdown.exe". Many solutions.

I read through this link I found on google.

http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.co...

From what it says, I seem to have a Power-Down problem, not a shut-down problem.

Im going try a few of the suggestions mentioned in the link.

I'll post back soon to let you know if any of them worked.

This link seems to have every solution I have seen on any sight wrapped up into one web page. This may help for many shutdown problems.

Another thought ---
Get into Windows Safe-Mode, and try Shutdown from there. See if problem still occurs.

Also
Most Virus and Spyware scans are likely to work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

This page has alot of XP fixes

Some require the download of a VBS file.
So, read at the top of that page--
"How to use a VBS file"

On the left side of line 76, click the word OFF.

I just noticed that when the computer is off and is plugged in, the "ON" light is blinking red. What does that mean? It could be the solution to my problem I think.

Go here--- http://h18000.www1.hp.com/
then click Product Support Information,
then enter in your exact Model name, and number,
then tick what information you want to know,
then proceed from there.
