have you got the correct drivers installed?

if the printer does not have an external power source (usb printer etc) you might have to get a more powerful power supply

if the printer DOES have its own power supply, make sure you installed the correct drivers for windows XP.

click start, settings, printers... remove your current printer, reboot the pc. if windows detects the printer and attempts to install it automatically, cancel that process, then log on to the internet, go to http://www.hp.com click on the "support and drivers" link and follow the process to locate the correct driver for your printer

Some additional things to try:

1) Start, Run, eventvwr.msc
Check the Application and System logs for Errors

2) Start, run, sysdm.cpl
Click Advanced, [Startup and Recovery] Settings, UNcheck "Automatically Restart"

3) Start, run, services.msc
Make sure "Print Spooler" is both Started and Automatic.

4) Try to print; repeat step 1.

5) Open Printers in the Control Panel, and run the Add Printer Wizard. Choose local, UNcheck auto detect, click Netxt. Use the following port, FILE. Next, choose your printer model from the list. Do not make it default, but DO print a test page. Choose a filename like C:\foo.prn and then make sure the file was created.

If step five works witout crashing, I think the problem is hardware rather than software.

Incidentally, you can "send" the foo.prn file to your printer by running a command like copy "C:\foo.prn" LPT1 or something like that--I forget exactly.
