Comment:

Recently i purchased a AMD 3200 desktop pc with 512mb ram and a 200gig hdd, as my P4 2.4 began re-booting when ever i placed a DVD into the DVDRW drive.
I assumed that there was a problem with my PC.

But this morning i discovered that as i went to convert an AVI file to DVD, the moment the AVI file was to be opened to begin converting, my NEW PC re-booted.

I tried it again with the exact same thing.

So much for my buying a NEW PC to solve the problem.

The ONLY common component from the old PC to the new is the DVDRW drive. But this was not in use when converting the AVI file.

I have all MO drivers installed, get no other errors at all until this problem this morning.

I have the following connected to the MO :
1 x IDE 200gig Hard Drive
1 x IDE DVDRW (Samsung) drive
1 x PCI AirPlus Wireless network Card
The power supply is a 400w.
The MO has the ususal on board stuff like :
6 x USB
1 x Ethernet
Sound + Video
That's it.

Has anyone had similar problems and have found a solution to it ?

How can i have the same problem with 2 x PC's ?

Replace the DVD drive, or borrow a friend's for a test.

But this morning the DVD drive was NOT in use, when the AVI file was about to be converted.
It was on my HDD.

I have another DVDRW and will swap them, but think it is not the problem, as it was not being used this morning when i got the re-boot.

Go to system properties, click advanced and then Settings under Startup and Recovery. Unclick Automatic Restart.

Next time the error occurs you should get a BSOD which will give you some indication of what the problem is. Do a search of the MS Knowledge Base with the information supplied and you should be able to narrow down the problem.

If the computer still restarts without a BSOD then I would begin to suspect that the power supply is being overloaded.

Stuart,
Thanx for the reply.
Will give that a go when i get home.

Would it not be coincidental that both PC's have power o'load problems though ?

I know it has a 400w ps and apart from the HHD, DVDRW and Wireless Network Card there is nothing else drawing power.
Though the DVDRW was not running this morning, so it(i would imagine) would not be drawing power from the ps.

Will see what the BSOD tells me after removing the RebootAuto is unchecked.

Ok.
Removed the tick from "Automatic Restart" in the system properties.
Now i get a Blue Screen telling me:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Technical Information
*** STOP: 0x00000008E (0x0000005,0xBFC8E8AC,0xB92587B4,0x00000000)
*** NV4_disp.dll - address BFC8E8AC base at BF9D5000, data stand 44e3a765
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Is there any info in that that can help narrow down the problem ?

Uninstalled NVIDIA Driver and downloaded from manufacturer new drive.
Installed new driver, and tried to convert avi file again.
This time with NO BSOD or Rebooting.
So it must have been the Driver.

So far that is....
