Alright, I am a former IT Support Tech. and I can't figure out what is going on with my own computer.

It works fine but when I do anything internet related (browsing internet, sending email) it freezes up completly. I haven't installed any new hardware/software so I'm confused as to how this problem got started.

System Specs
Intel P4 3.2 GHz
Windows XP Pro, SP2
1GB Ram

I installed all the latest windows updates. Ran virus/adware scan with nothing found. Replaced memory.

Defragged hard drive. Used system resore. Tried using it in safe mode but does the same thing.

What else is there for my to do to fix this problem? I can't reinstall xp (have about 160GB of data and don't feel like going through all of that) so i'm looking for any other solutions out there.

First let's address this most important part of your computer. If you are a former IT Support Tech you no doubt know better how irreplacable your data are. Computers (especially Windows) can & do crash for no reason. Hard drives does wear out. When this happens you will very much regret it. My advice: Back them up to maybe external USB HD NOW.

Now with respect to the browser freezing, do you use IE6?

Use the built in tools. Use perfmon, taskman and event viewer to guide you to a solution. It might be that your perfmon test needs to be set up on another system to prevent it's effect on the system. See also logs from routers or other devices that have abilities to track performance.

I had this problem and found out it was a momentary cut off from the cable company that supplies the broadband. In between finding this out I installed Norton clean up and that has been a great help....the one button scan and the cleaner that cleans up internet debris.

I am using the new IE beta version but the computer freezes when I use firefox, opera, and aol explorer. The browsers work fine when I am working offline so I don't think that is the problem.

Used the perfomance log, nothing came up in it upon crashing. Network manager just shows the computer freezing up whenever there is network usage. No problems showed up in my cable modem log as well.

Did norton's quick cleanup fix your problem?

Problem fixed by removing windows onecare security program. Seems like my computer updated the program the night before I started having problems.

Thanks everyone for your help!
