My PC has been freezing up on shutdown from XP. I have seen the MSFT KB support articles, but they are flawed. In this article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=307274 , they tell you to install an update called "Restarting Windows XP" but the instructions don't work and I can't find the update anywhere on the MSFT site. I have installed Service Pack 2 and that didn't work either. I have installed every recommended update. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Would be nice to know how far the screen display
gets to before it quits. Or what is said on the screen.

HI,

This can be because of the system tray applications. Try closing them and see if it shuts down fine.

Had the same problem with my sister's computer. Go to start, run, and type regedit. Then go to HkeyCurrentUser/ControlPanel/Desktop.

Then look for AutoEndTasks to the right. Then dbl click it and set the value to 1. Its prolly 0 right now. Post back.

The PC freezes when it gets to "Saving Windows settings" - but one thing I noticed is that it only seems to happen on occasions when the machine has gone to standby mode (as per its power mgmt settings) and then back on before I shut it down manually. I will check the regedit setting. Thanks.
