start/shutdown/shutdown doesn't shutdown my computer. i can make it hibernate and standby, but not shutdown or log off. when i try either of the last two, nothing happens. i just see the desktop as usual. need all the help i can get...

goto control panel/power options/advance and make sure the right thing is selected for power button..

halfnoob, FWIW, Windows seems to have been plagued with shutdown problems of one sort or another since day 1. I use a standalone shutdown proggie (for convenience) called 'Slawdog' (said to work on all versions). Get it free @: http://www.slawdog.com/products/sma... among other places. Works good and I drag/dropped the icon into my quicklaunch so it'd be handy for use. HTH. Ed in Texas.
