PC crashes before login screen appe

Hi, this is actually my friends problem, so I cant tell you the specific system specs atm. I'll try to find out later. The problem is, when he turns his pc on now, it restarts just before the login screen appears, safe mode, starting from last good configuration, and safe mode with command prompt either do the same or freeze . The BIOS can be entered, but i couldnt see anything which would help. Please post your solutions in plain old english please, as we are both novices. Cheers Dom
