PC Anywhere, Remote desktop

Is remote desktop as good as PC Anywhere? I need to set up a remote control program for a user who is leaving the country and would like to control his XP Pro desktop with his XP Pro laptop (file transfers are a must as well).
I've used PC Anywhere extensively and I know it will do the job... But, will remote desktop do the same job? I've only used remote desktop through an "email" support request and have never set it up to function like PC Anywhere. Will it function like PC Anywhere? Run as a service, allow file tranfers etc? Is it reliable? Easy to set up? Configure with a router/firewall?
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
