I have a small network at home with computers all running Windows XP Home.
I was wondering how do you password a computer or shared folders on a network so that if someone on another computer went into My Network Places and doubled clicked my pc or my shared folders it would ask them for a password to access.
I have seen this done on a different network but the main computer was running windows 2000??
Any help would be much appreciated....

My computers are spread out in my home and if i was on the downstairs computer i might want to put something on my pc upstairs on the network. But when i use my computer i dont want other family members accessing my shared folders.

To the best of my knowledge there's not a way to do it in XP. If you're wanting to look at a file or something like that you could just use Remote Desktop or something. Hell, you could just FTP to the other computer. LOL
Sorry I can't be more help.

I have been networking computers for over a year, and so far I haven't seen any way to password a particular drive from use on other computers... However, I have a kind of make-shift way to doing this.... It's a little sketchy as a procedure, and needs to be set up on both computers- it's called "Remote Desktop," and basically, you take control of another desktop, with access to 'everything' on the opposing PC.
If you do not know how to set up, and use Remote Desktop, contact me and I will explain it to you :)

I dont mean password a hard drive, i mean password the pc in network places or a shared folder. I have been using the computing.net search and i think i have found my answer.
All you guys who posted look at this Post..

Dini, that's what I told him...unfortunately if he wanted to use one of the files from the remote computer he would have to have FTP or something set up. That's exactly what I said before you posted you remarks. He can access all the files on the remote desktop...but can only use them on the remote pc. We need a clear understanding of if he needs to installed programs from the other computer or not. Please, read the other posts before you make the comments of your own.
BTW Justin, if you need help with remote desktop, you can contact me too.

Soz for the misunderstanding

No worries, I just hate people trying to pawn someone elses ideas to a solution as their own. People should be creative! /grin
