mdkielty, single files, yes. Whole folders, yes. Entire HDs,. dunno how unless a bios password will do the job for you.

No Not your harddrive but you can protect and encrypt all your files and folders....but be warned that using this and you forget the key or loose it..then you are in trouble.

This works in XP as well.

If it is a laptop some have the option for password protect. The one major drawback is that if you forget the password you will not get the data recovered. The same if you use any utility that encrypts the data or the drive. Data recovery is normally not an option in that case.

I have an unconventional procedure that I use. If the files are private enough that I don't want anyone else to access them then I don't place them on a hard drive at all.

CDR can store lots of data. DVDR 6 times more. Safes can hold lots of disks.
