password isn't being accepted by laptop

Specs: xp professional
I bought a laptop from my son's friend, there were no disks for it just the charger cord. After I bought it, I changed the pass word, then when the system shut down the password didn't work when system was rebooted. I have only had the puter about 4 days and now can't even use it. I have tried almost everything I have read on the net from others about trying to reset the password, going through safe mode to try and do a system recovery was a joke, I went in the bios and took the passwords out that were there and still wasn't abe to get past the log in for stage. Even when i is setting idol, it comes up that the password isn't accpted. Is there any hope for me?

This tool may be used to reset a Windows password. Please make sure you read the instructions carefully and note that it is more reliable to remove the password than to change it. You can always go back and set a new password via the control panel when you're finished:

To do this, you'll need access to another computer with a CD burner to create a bootable CD from the downloaded file.
