we put our computer away because we ot a new one
and we now wanna use it for a hardrive but it gave itself
a password and we did not give it a username or a
password is there any way to get by that

yes easey boot up the computer while holding down F5 or F8 depending on system load computer in safe mode then select administrator it should not require a password then go to control panel and reset the password to the user there and then restart the computer and login with the new password that was set good luck

Is the old computer a laptop? If a desktop just clear the CMOS by removing the coin battery off the motherboard while the computer is unplugged.
If it is a laptop and the password is on the hard drive there is not method to unlock the drive.

well first reply didn't work, it just comes back up with enter user
name and user password...even in safe mode.Second can't for the life of me get that battery out...

I just reread your original post and realized I misunderstood the question.
Clearing the CMOS will not solve your problem.
Your are looking for a Windows password.
If you are going to use the hard drive for storing files then just reformat it. Are you planning on moving the drive to a different computer?

Really just talking some photos off it and the rest I dont care. I
want to use it as a extra hard drive for my other computer. I can't even get it reformated.

Just install it as a Slave drive on the other computer and you will then be able to access the files but not boot into the copy of Windows on it.
You may need to take ownership of the files/folders on the old drive once you install it. To learn how to do that look at the link below.

in addition to OtheHill's reply, after taking ownership of the drive you should copy or move the photos to your C: drive.
Then from within XP (right click on My Computer and select Manage go to Disk Management, right click the newly installed (OLD) drive and select FORMAT) you can then format the drive and use its entire space as storage.
(That wasn't confusing, I hope)
I'm sure you'll get it.
