I'm wondering if I can use something like Partition Magic to partition my usb drive that already has data stored. I'm building a new PC and didn't want to purchase a new hard drive, and I was going to use my external and put it in the computer. I want to leave what is on it though (100 gb). Since I don't have enough space on another HD to backup the 100 gigs I just wanted to partition.

adam73647, I'm not too sure just what you're saying. If you're talking about a partition on a new HD, then the answer's yes. If you create the partition, you can then transfer the data from your old hard drive onto the new with no problem. If, on the other hand, you want to create a partition on the old drive and not lose the data on the drive, dunno. Gut says no, but Partition Magic might be able to do it. Perhaps there's a program expert here who knows for sure. HTH. Ed in Texas.

Hi, Acronis Disk Director should partition your external HDD. It's very relieble software for such act, as it has fool-proof windows wizard.

I think partition magic will do it, but I wouldn't because I had a bad experience with PM before and it locked up my computer and it destroyed all data on two hard drives.

PM will do. Never once (since Powerquest first introduced it) did I ever had problems installing & using it to partition customers large internal and external HDs.

Just be sure you are using PM 8.0 or later. XP doesn't like the older versions.

you'd better backup your best important data before you partition it.
