A friend of mine just partioned his HD through a fresh XP install and is wondering why his second partion is NOT drive D:\? His first part. is C:\, his cd-rom is D:\, dvd is E:\ and second partition is F:\. his HD w/ both partitions (C: & F:) is on the first IDE controller, and his two CD-Roms (D: & E:) is on the second controller. Is there anyway to reassign the drive letters so his HD is c: & d:?
thanks

It happened because the second partition was not essential for anythign when setting up windows.
The cd drive would have been a higher priority then, so it will have been assigned a drive letter first.
You can rename the drives by right clicking my computer, left clicking onto manage, then going to disk management. you can right click on the partitions and rename to whatever you want.

To add to rtall's comments. Standard dos parameters come into play here. Without going into this too much The primary partition of the first drive is assigned the C: designation then the primary partition of the second drive is assigned the second letter, D:. In order to reassign the drive letters you must first free up the letter you want to you. If you want the D: letter to represent something else you must first reassign the existing drive. I suggest you temporarily assign a letter in the range beyond what will be used. So move the CDrom to say letter T:. This allows you to move the First logical drive to the D: designation. Which frees up E: to use for the second logical drive. And so on an so forth. After this is done you can then move the CDrom to the next available Letter.

XP has a different drive letter allocation algorithm which may give rise to unexpected allocation if you are used to the DOS/Win9X style.

To learn more on the subject, visit my website and look up the section titled "Windows Drive Letter Assignments". It also has links to MS and non-MS sites that I came across when I first encountered the issue.

I hope it helps.
