partition magic error 4

September 5, 2010 at 00:00:04
Specs: Windows XP
I tried to enlarge D: and shrink C: using partition magic under XP pro. After about 33% I got the error message about an "error 4". Since then XP doesn't restart any more. Any ideas how to solve this without losing my data and my installations? Thanks

... is >>this<< the error?

... guessing C: drive is the one with os on it(?)

... might be an idea to do it one stage at a time ie... shrink C: reboot, then expand D:

... suggest you backup your data first. If P/M see's the partition as "Bad" you may have a problem in which case you may have to delete the partition losing data!

Hi mavis007,

1. Your guess is right - C is the XP boot partition.
2. Well, PM has done this several years without any problem. But you are right, I should have been more cautious.

I tried to repair this problem by booting form a PM Boot CD but PM can't read the partition (though the NTFS is recognized and the Size is recognized as well).

Right now I am saving my files using linux - this works smoothly. My next idea is to boot from XP-CD and to try chkdsk /f. My guess is a bad MBR and maybe XP can repair it.

It would louse uo my next days if I had to reinstall XP and all my applications from scratch. That's why I ask the community

... think you'll find that P/magic will call any "active" partition C:
(the one you're booting to)

... sounds like you know what you're doing ...maybe try other partition software after backing up: http://www.partition-tool.com/
