Assuming P.M.8 - here is from the Symantec support site: http://entkb.symantec.com/security/...
Errors 48/9 seem to indicate a problem on the hard disk.
Good luck

.....Try this:
How to run Microsoft CHKDSK from the command line (use chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r)
http://entkb.symantec.com/security/...If that doesn't help,
Check your hard drive.

To tubasandwires thanks but......... (1)PM tecnical issues / no help/ no recognition for error 1611 etc
(2)have ran chkdsk several times
(3) no help for this issue in your 3rd suggestionactually the issue has to do with a long file name/ not really a disk errror as such
saw a post somewhere whereby the files need to be accessed & renamed/ apparently XP has certain files that effect PM for disk merging.
anyway / what I did is: I moved the files I wanted to another location/ formatted the 2nd drive then resized my "C" drive with part of the formatted drive / now I have the larger "C" disk I needed. Interestingly, all functions in PM work like a dream except merging but resizing can give the same end result if there is sufficient empty spacesomeday if I ever have nothing to do I may go looking for that post I found re individiually re-naming the offending files
but for now I have exactly what I needed
thanks for trying guysfelix

So was the error number 1161 or 1611 or what?
Running chkdsk won't help unless you use the /f or /r switches, with a space between chkdsk and /.
Does the hard drive passes the manufacturer's diagnostics? If you do not have PM 8.x but an earlier version, PM 8.x has no problem I know of with long file names, but earlier versions might, say, 4 or below.
I know from experience PM 5.0 cannot handle a partition size or total drive size larger than 64gb properly.
If it is PM 8.0 you have, the 8.0 Windows version has lots of bugs - there is an upgrade / patch available on the Symantec web site, or you can get it here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilit... - 11.5mb
You could also try the Dos version of PM. E.g. on the PM 8.0 CD you can go to the \RescueMe folder and run Setup and it makes a two floppy set - you boot with the first one.

error 1611 48 (9) actually
ran chkdsk with the f/ & /r switchs/ no success
'tis PM 8/ I don't know about the accrucay of that post I sae re thr long file names?
anway I might go have a look @ that PM post in the meantime,my larger drive is working so well
& I can store the DOS thought if I ever need to run PM again to merge drives
anyway I have o do the PM sikettes again/ I tried them & didn't workfelix

A search of the web using: partition magic error 1611
reveals you are not alone, some get the exact same 1611 48 (9) error, and I have found no fix so far, other than using a different paid for program. Many report using chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r does not help.PM 8.0 should support long file names no problem, but as I pointed out before the Windows version of 8.0 has lots of bugs and you should update it to the upgraded version if that's what you are using.
I have no idea if the Dos version you can make from the CD will give you the same error.
If you can't get the Dos version to work you may be using (a) floppy disk(s) that have previously undetected bad sectors on them.
I recommend you use Windows to check your floppy using FULL format. FULL format is slower, but will find and exclude from use any previously undetected bad sectors on a floppy, a common problem these days.
In XP, RIGHT click on A: to find Format, DO NOT use the Quick format switch, format the floppy. After the format has finished, RIGHT click on A:, choose Properties - Free Space should be 1,457,664 bytes for an error free floppy. If it is less than that and the floppy is less than about 7 years old, I recommend you don't use it - it will probably get worse. Format another floppy instead.Personally I have only used the PM 8.0 Dos version, and I have no had problems with it, but I have not tried merging partitions.
Things you could try.
Take a look at PM8.pdf on your PM 8 CD (or your hard drive if it was copied there), and search using: merge and make sure you are trying to merge partitions that can be merged. E.g. if both have an operating system on them, it would be disasterous to merge them, and PM may not allow you to do that. If it looks like you are trying to do a merge that can be done, then....
- Update Windows PM to the upgraded version. I don't know if that will also update files for the Dos version that may be then made available on your hard drive.
- You may not be able to merge partitions if one of them has the Windows Partition Magic installed on it and that is where you are trying to run Partition Magic from. Try the Dos version.
- There must be a minimum amount of free space in each partition you are trying to merge - if either or both are full or almost full, try un-installing or deleting files or programs you don't need or that can be re-installed to free up more free space.
- Defrag the partitions before you try to merge them - Defrag takes a lot less time on most systems if you boot into Safe mode, then run it.
- Have PM check each of the partitions one by one for errors before you try merging - you may get a different error message, and that may lead to info for how to fix that, and once that is fixed you may no longer get the 1611 error when trying to merge partitions.
......Alternates
Do both partitions have data in them? If one doesn't, or if you can empty it so it doesn't you don't need to merge partitions. If one has no data, delete the partition, then re-size the other partition to take up the un-allocated space
....There are lots of freeware partition managing programs, but I know of none that can merge partitions that already have data in them without losing the data.
