Hello everyone,

I got myself into deep trouble. I used Partition Magic 8 to merge my C & D partitions. After applying the changes, mt system would not start. I booted from my Win XP CD. However, I canot see the repair option; it sees that primary partition as an unforamtted disk. Hence, it gives me the options of deleting it or formatting it. My guess is that the Master Boot Record (MBR) was corrupted during the merge process.

Any idea as to how to fix this problem without having to reformat this newly created partition which will necessitate that I re-install Win XP Pro and all my other apps.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
Zak

You have to go as if you were going to do a fresh install, when it asks you which partition you would like to install to, select your primary partition (The one it thinks Xp isn't on), you should then be told "Xp already on this partition, would you like to repair?".

If you can't get that message, get formatting mate, lol.

Insert the Setup compact disc (CD) and restart the computer. If prompted, select any options required to boot from the CD.

When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose the repair or recover option by pressing R.

If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.

When prompted, type the Administrator password.

At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command.

(The command you want is FIXMBR)

To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit.

Thanks everyone.
I will attempt theses suggestions. I am sure I didn't get the Repair option when I booted from the WIn XP CD. Is there a way to get the fixboot or fixmbr from the CD?

Thanx again :)

Hello Again,

I managed to run CHKDSK and logon to Windows {I am writing this message from the once-corrupted Windows installtion}. However, I cannot see any other partition. Any idea what do I need to do to see the remaining partitions?

It turned out that Partition Magic did not complete the task of merging the tow partitions. I found out that the errot number is 117 from Partition Magic 8.

Your help is appreciated.

Zak
