Partition 2 - can't log in

August 11, 2012 at 09:44:19
Specs: Windows XP, AMD Athlon 64 bit/2GB RAM
I tried to fix windows after getting a virus by reinstalling windows which I now gather was really stupid. I think I created a partition that I don't want & can't log in except via safe mode. Can I undo the partition? Let me know what info you need from me. Cheers

I'm sorry, I'm not very knowledgeabe but I think the answer is no, as in safe mode I can access everything & run programs. However I can't log in normally - I get the blue screen.

You didn`t mention blue screen in the initial post. Is that BSOD? (click here)

I think that having an excess partition can`t prevent you from logging in. You might be experiencing a different problem. If the blue screen looks like the one given in the picture, post the error code you get in the bottom of the screen, so you can receive further assistance.

When the blue screen shows up, press Alt + Ctrl + Delete. Now Task Manager should come up. In the Application tab, click New Task, and write the following:

C:\Windows\explorer.exe..and click OK. Do the start menu and the icons show up?

If you didn't have a 2nd partition already created, you would have gone thru numerous steps to create one. I think you'd remember doing that?

Otherwise, you probably reinstalled Windows & didn't pay attention to where it was installing, & instead of going into C:\Windows, it went into C:\Windows.000. Check the C:\ directory to see if that's correct.

BTW, reinstalling Windows won't remove a virus unless you completely wipe the hard drive & start from scratch.

Hi Riider - Nope it went into C:\windows - but I used to have a choice of OS when I started up. I checked driver file details & there are 2 files: C\Windows\system32\DRIVERS\disk.sys & C\Windows\system32\drivers\partMgr.sys

You shouldn't post log files unless specifically asked to do so. It even says that at the top of the log - UNLESS SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTED, DO NOT POST THIS LOG.

Do you have two internal HDDs or one internal & one external?

"C: is FIXED (NTFS) - 228 GiB total, 152.672 GiB free"

Probably a 250GB HDD. It appears to have just one partition that uses the entire drive space.

"G: is FIXED (FAT32) - 298 GiB total, 119.027 GiB free"

Is that an external HDD? It's unusual to see an internal 320GB HDD formatted with FAT32. Windows won't even "allow" you to format a drive that large with FAT32. Microsoft limits FAT32 to a max size of 32GB. The drive would have to have been formatted using 3rd party software.

Your best bet may be to wipe the HDD clean & reinstall Windows from scratch. And if the 320GB IS an external, it should be disconnected while Winodws is being installed.

yes, g is external. c is internal. Are you sure I should wipe HDD? There's nothing I can do to fix it? safemode works, it's all there. I just can't log in normally.
