Parallel-port Zip drive via USB?

May 11, 2006 at 04:46:17
Specs: WinXP SP2, Intel Celeron 1.4GHz/512M
My old parallel-port zip drive moved without trouble from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 and then to WinXP (on my old computer with a parallel port). But my new laptop has no legacy parallel/serial sockets, only USB2 and firewire. I purchased a USB to parallel 25-pin D female cable. This works fine with an old parallel-port printer, but I have not managed to get it working with the parallel port Zip drive (the USB connection is 'ding-dong' recognized, but no new drives appear in My Computer).

Has anyone succeeded in making this work? Or am I attempting the impossible?

Well, I can tell you that I've used a USB-to-serial cable in the past to test legacy hardware, and the results were hit and miss. Some things worked fine. Others devices didn't--and as I discovered by searching the web, they did not adhere to the serial protocol.

So if the Iomega drive follows to the parallel port protocols, it might work. Otherwise, probably not.
