I removed Paperport 8.0 and ran several registry cleaners. I searched my whole hard drive and there is none left.

However, when I try to run Weather Watcher.exe or another application, Paperport tries to install. After several cancels it finally quits.

I logged in as another profile and its fine. So its in my profile. I must have something that when I click these apps it triggers the installer for paperport.

There must be some key or file I can find to kill this beast.

Appreciate the great advice, only been there down that. This is indeed most challenging. I know for sure its in my profile, but my profile is too setup to redo it.

Paperport 8.0 SE tries to install when I run apparently at least two VB applications. Weather watcher and Regfixer. They come up but only after the above is attempted a few times.

I've looked at the installshield too with no success.

Paperport required $10.00 for an email support. Can you imagine! They'll never get a dime of money from me again because that is terrible tech support. For an email!

If I could fix out what ties the apps to launch this install I would be set.

If you have been down the path > To manually remove PaperPort from my link above, all that is left is turn off System Restore, reboot & turn it back on.

=======================================

Note: These steps include removing items from the Windows Registry. If you are running a Windows NT 4.0 or 2000 system, confirm that you are logged on as the Administrator for all of these steps. Please follow each step carefully:

Follow these steps to make sure that no PaperPort processes are running in the background:

1. Press "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" to bring up the Task Manager (on Windows NT 4.0, 2000, and XP click the "Task Manager" button and then click the "Processes" tab).
2. Locate the following processes and if they exist, highlight them and click "End Task" or "End Process":
* pptd40nt.exe
* pplinks.exe
* paprport.exe
* ssindexer.exe
* ppscanmg.exe
* ppwebcap.exe

Follow these steps to remove all PaperPort Windows Registry keys and files from the computer.

1. Open the Registry Editor by clicking "Start > Run". Type in "regedit" without the quotes and click “OK”.
2. Export a backup copy of your Registry in case problems occur during the following procedures by going to:
* Windows 98SE, 2000, and ME: Registry menu > Export registry file.
* Windows XP: File > Export Registry File.
3. Save this file to the Windows Desktop and name the file "backup". (You can keep "backup" for a few days and if all is well, this file can be deleted.)
4. Delete the following Registry keys (folders on the left side) by right-clicking and choosing delete. Click Yes when prompted to confirm.
Note: Some of these keys may not exist.

5. Exit out of the Windows Registry.
6. Navigate to c:\Program Files\ScanSoft\ and delete the "PaperPort" folder. If this folder is not available, delete the folder C:\Paprport.
7. Restart the computer.

Confirm that the PaperPort print driver has been removed:

1. Go to "Start","Settings","Control Panel","Printers".
2. Confirm that PaperPort is not listed.
3. If PaperPort is listed, right click on the PaperPort icon and select “Delete”.
4. Empty the Recycle Bin.

Your going the extra mile, Thanks!

However, I followed those instructions and the little bugger still tries to load.

One noticeable difference is after I ran that utility to remove it {the one from Brother}, it now wants to install it upon bootup.

Now that can be a good thing, if I could find out what is calling it to do that. In this case, it acts like it installs it and then finishes.

So I have two instances where it tries to install. During bootup after I run that utility; and afterwards when I try to run those two VB apps.

System restore is in my mind; only it will have more paperport settings in it from being on previously. Still I might try it.

Fixed!!!

JohnW I finally broke down and did the system restore. --That fixed my trying to load PaperPort SE 8.0.

But I found I had over 800 entries now in the registry for "Scansoft" and "Paperport."

Also the application was still in C:\ and was in the "installed applications list."

Trying to clear it all out only brought back the problem as originally posted.

So I tried you idea along with another. I re-ran System Restore and tried to run the application. When it asked for the installation Cdrom, I put it in and let it install it.

I held my breathe whether it would really install it or even if it would work.

Bingo. It installed and it works and no more installing messages while running other apps.

Over four hours on this one! Hope it helps others.

Thanks for your help.
