OS: XP Pro
CPU/Ram: Duron 1133MHz, 512 MB Ram
Comment:

Somehow when I reformatted my drive and installed XP Pro, it formatted as Fat32 instead of NTFS. After installing a program (which didnt work and had to be removed), I get the error message that my Paging File is too small...blah blah.. I found instructions from MS on how to fix it, however it will not change the settins and I still have a zero size paging file. I figured that it had to be due to the file system type. Is this an issue that can be resolved (hurts a little when using some graphic programs or other memory hogs)? Do I have to reformat with the correct file system type?

Please help.

yeah this happened with my comp and like you, I did all the stuff Microsoft said but what finally worked was me clearing a lot of space off my boot drive. I know somewhere it recommended at least 2X the amount of RAM needs to be in free space (In your case obviously at least 1024MB free space). This did it for me. Hope this helps.

I have 28gb's free of a 40gb drive. Are referring to a certain folder on the drive that needs to be cleared (perhaps where the swap file is held?)? The drive is not partitioned.

bayman,

You have ample free space. Jiggy probably had a full HDD and his situation is most likely different from yours.

Are you letting Windows (system managed) handle your page file now? As for the file system type used I did not think that mattered with FAT32 or NTFS. You may want to "convert" to an NTFS file system.

Using Windows XP Help and Support utility do a search on page file. There's some info there you may want to read. If you want to convert to an NTFS file system then type in convert to NTFS in the search field.

Since my drive is not partitioned, can this be done (and saving everything, ie. programs, documents) on the fly? Or should I just quit being lazy and reformat and start over?

Yes you can do it on the fly and it will not change anyting on your hard drive, programs, documents etc. It's actually quite easy, and painless. Convert is the command you use. There are a lot of articles on the WEb that explain it. It's quite easy.

convert to NTFS from FAT

open the command prompt

type

CONVERT c: /FS:NTFS

then restart your computer.

The process may take about 30 minutes.
