Go to CONTROL PANEL > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS >LOCAL SECURITY POLICY. Then to Local policies > SECURITY OPTIONS. Change the option to enable in 'Shutdown:Clear Virtual Memory Pagefile'.
Or just download this freeware to make things simpler-

The pagefile is a system file used by Windows as virtual memory swap space. It is quite necessary, and I would EXTREMELY discourage deleting it or turning off VM. You can, however, make it smaller.

Right-click on "My Computer" and go down to "Properties". Then click on the "Advanced" tab, and click on Performance "Settings". Then go to the "Advanced" tab at the top, and click on the "Change" button in the Virtual Memory section at the bottom.

Here, you can click on each drive, and set a paging file size, or turn it off completely. I would recommend setting the pagefile to at least 1.5x your REAL RAM if you have less than 512 MB. If you have more than that, you should use at least 1x.

So, if you have 256 MB of RAM, set the "Currently Allocated" paging file size (at the bottom) to 384 or 512 MB. You can also distribute the page file between multiple drives, if you have any.

One last note, I always set the Initial Size and the Maximum Size the same. MS sets them differently, but this can lead to performance hits, and possibly stability issues, when the OS tries to resize the pagefile.

Hope this helps.

Even if you have a ton of RAM, XP will create a pagefile once in a while. Don't know why but it does. Try lowering the size of yur pagefile and make it a static size.

I am using about 600 MB right now and Windows has stopped telling me that it needs to increase the pagefile. (Currently have 644 MB of physical RAM).

You can experiment and try lowering the number of MB for your pagefile every few days or so until you find the threshold whereupon WIndwos XP creates its own agin, then raise it back up.

Hit and miss really.
